Rust on front wheel arches. Seat belt presenters. Gearbox smoothness (or not). Head gasket. Oil pressure. Rear screen delamination (seems milky in one corner). Broken suspension springs.

I can definitely see de-lamination on the back screen. Would that need immediate attention?

One of the best looking cars of the late 80s, early 90s.

Get it bought. Everything is fixable.

Another car that has come onto my radar for the first time is the 208 CLK230 Kompressor, any good? Why? because they seem to be about the same price but with many more on the market.

Now, I know, I know! The 124 coupe is a thing of beauty but realistically now which one is going to be the better proposition for me? in terms of performance and running costs?

What potential pitfalls are there guys?

Doesn't seem to be a very 'PH' kinda car.

The W124 is a legend. The interior is a bit austere but they're superb.

I own a 400 E saloon. It's covered 150K but still has high compression and doesn't use oil of any significance.

The transmission has started to slip so I'm getting this rebuilt. This is the thing to check for- listen out for noises from the transmission and sense out any slipping.

They're not a drivers car in the same way as the opposite corner from BMW but you revel in the engineering and soldity of the car. I got my car for the wife. Its spent 18 winters in snowy salty Chicago and yet exhibits minimal superficial rust. I hear the bodies aren't even galvanised.

If its a flare between 2-3 its just a spring which costs £10 and is changed in 2 mins with the sump off (basically just an oil/atf change). 4speed is a tough old box.

I worked for MB for a number of years and I soon fell in love with the 124's, the only thing that is putting me off this particular one is the colour, I'm really not mad about it, although it does however, suit the cars year.

I find myself in quite the quandary as there is not a great selection over here and importing is just a headache.

Not to mention Mr Motortax Man will have me to the tune of €1350 a year for this beauty!!! - and the roads are HORRENDOUS!

I need another car by next weekend.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I rather like the colour of that 300 CE.

I ran one for a while. Very enjoyable cruising on the motorway and wafting around town. Nice turn of speed from 60 to 100 in 4th (top on my example); right in the power band then.

One thing to watch for not already mentioned is the condition of ignition barrel. I had a new one fitted on advice from a Merc specialist as it was showing signs of wear. When they wear out the key can become stuck in the barrel which then neccesites cutting the dash to get it out. Much simpler (and cheaper!) to replace it before that happens. I think he could feel some resistance as it turned. The new one was much smoother.

I thought that already, took out the valve body and found the K1 spring already changed. I then changed out the K2 spring/accumilator ( I found one the the seals had blown!)and did a minor rebuild of the valve body itself.
It's a continual slipping in 3rd gear. Unfortunately I think it's the clutch as when I put it back together it made no difference.

I've learned alot about automatic Merc boxes though, including how to adjust the transmission vacuum modulator to adjust the shift quality
