Hello all,

Just a quick question.

I have a Ford Puma 1.7, last night it lost power and cut out and will not start now.
I have had a friend over who is a mechanic and has had a going over of the car. After checking the usual suspects they have advised me that it is more than likely a faulty crankshaft sensor.

Now my question,

If this sensor is faulty and preventing the engine from starting, would the car still lunge forwards when I attempt to start it in gear?

I hope this makes sense and I hope someone can enlighten me.

If the engine turns over on the starter then yes, it will.

I have worded it wrong,

I have tried starting it in gear and it does lunge forwards, would this still happen if the crankshaft sensor is faulty?

Yes as the other fella said.

The sensor has nothing to do with the mechanical link between engine and gearbox

when started in gear.smile

Ok folks,

Thank you very much for your wisdom.

Wish me luck when I replace this sensor tomorrow.

Cheers

Yep. If the engine is turning over, then the car will lunge forward if you start it in gear with the clutch out, regardless of whether the crank sensor is working.

If anyone has any suggestions then I am all ears!!!

Help please.

I am not too sure actually.

He had me turn the key and he pulled a plug from the coil pack, he said that there was no sign of a spark on that.

I can hear the fuel pump prime but apart from that I have no idea how to check for

Spark
Fuel
Compression

I have spent the past while checking the Readings from the multimeter on the HT leads, coil pack and battery using instructions in a Haynes manual.
I think I have done it correctly and it shows no obvious faults from any of those components.

There is no spark getting to the plugs!

The battery is currently recharging due to cranking it over too often.

The EML light is still displayed on the dash and I intend having the codes read tonight hopefully.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what could be the problem then I'd be very grateful.

Thanks again folks!

coil pack is possible and its cheap and easy to replace and its a common failure on these Pumas = although usually they run rough for a while before actually cutting out.

Firstly I have checked the coil pack and leads with a multimeter. Going by what a Haynes manual says then all seems fine with them.

I have no spark on the plugs and I have an EML on.

What does this suggest is wrong?

Also, at around £90 for a coil pack I don't fancy just swapping it our for fun.

Cheers

I had the AA out and the guy tried reading the ECU but it is showing no errors even though the EML is on and the car refuses to start and is not sparking.

Car has been recovered to a garage and they will be having a look.

Thanks for the help folks.

Hello all,

I had the ECU read as the EML was on. No fault codes were registered.

I had the car recovered to a local indy and they have also tried and failed to diagnose the problem.

My car has no spark showing from the plugs or the end of the leads. I replaced the crankshaft sensor and the garage tried a new coil pack, neither of these solved the issue.

The garage have said that they believe the camshaft sensor should be the next thing to look at and if that does not work then they think the coil pack has failed and maybe spiked the ECU.

Can anyone please give me their opinions on the matter and how you think I should go forward.

I intend on keeping the car as long as it doesnt cost a fortune to repair.

Thank you!

Right OP bear with me.

A friends GF just had this problem with a puma. The problem was a part that was around the spark plugs and meant that water was getting onto the spark plugs.

Not much help but have a look to see if it's wet, apparently the spark plug recesses are quite deep?

Hi,

Thank you for your response but I dont think that is an issue, There are no signs of any water/residue and there is no spark coming out of the plug end of the HT leads>

Any other advice???
