...that isn't an MX-5. It has to be good at motorways, cost less than £2500. Insurance not an issue within reason.
I guess I'm more after a lazy top-down cruiser than a out-and-out back road machine - I must be getting old.

Hit me up with ideas!

Saab 900/ 9-3

Volvo C70

Audi Cabriolet.

Vauxhall Astra Convertible

Maybe a w124 Merc or CLK if you can find a good one in budget. Or a Pug 307 CC/ Renault Megance CC if you are insane.

Why do you want a convertible that is good on M-ways? All crap for wind noise at that budget I would have thought. You might want something with a hardtop if you spend alot of time at 60/80 mph. Add it onto the budget perhaps?

Phew it's not just me that fancies a big lazy soft convertible.

I'd go with an E36 or a C70 or of course a 9-3. BMW would top that list though.

What part of "lazy top-down cruiser" are some posters struggling with? The OP wants scuttle shake and soft suspension damnit! wink

That Volvo C70 would be my choice too, if you can find a good one in budget.

For £2.5k I'd look at a BMW E36 323 or maybe 328 - great cars easy to fettle with but the plastic rear screen might be a put off.

I don't think you can get the newer E46 (2000 onwards) under budget but I could be wrong.

Hard tops are so last year ...LOL

£2.5k will get you an SL that is ready for the knacker.

Best buy is an E36 BM, although they are pretty unrefined on the motorway with the top down. (or up, the wind noise over the soft roof is loud).

Peugeot 206cc? Maybe? Perhaps these are in budget?

Save a little more, SLKs start at about £3k. A folding metal roof as got to be the best choice for motorways.

206cc is a pretty sensible suggestion I reckon, more so than a W124 merc cabriolet someone suggested above - given the budget. At £2.5k _something_ is gonna have to give. I thought maybe street cred.

Don't go for the 9-3, they are not structurally very sound. Search for bulkhead cracking

We've got a MY2000 Golf Mk3/4 Convertible which is worth about £2K. It's a Colour Concept and has full leather and air-con, so is pretty specced up. It's not the quickest at 115bhp but is certainly solid, and doesn't feel like a convertible with the hood up. Given my choice though, I'd go for an E36 325i.
