My daughter has been having lessons since her 17th birthday a few months ago. She has now got to a point where it would be beneficial for her to have her own car to get more practise in. Neither my car or my wifes are suitable. A friend has managed to find me a 1 owner 44,000 mile 2002 Clio 1.2 Expression which we have bought.

I knew the insurance would be expensive but was very pleased to find a company that has quoted less then £500 TPFT while she is on her provisional. The company is one that specialises in Provisional drivers so I will have to change to another company when she passes but their rebate policy is very fair. i.e If she passes her test in 6 months time i will get 6 months premium back less an admin fee of £50. After that we will need to look around for full cover but am getting indicative quotes of around £1,000.

I guess it is still a lot of money but not as bad as anticipated.

I don't know if I can name the company but drop me a PM if interested.

(should add that I have no affiliation with said company and had not actually heard of them before.)

You can name the company, that's fine - and good to hear.

For now at least, owning breasts rather than testes is a very helpful thing when starting out!

Renaults are very cheap to insure as they spend such little time moving under their own power

Try the same exercise for lad same age, national debt. My son is now into his 3rd year of cover so the rates are gradually coming down. Fairly safe driver, the added incentive of " if you have a claim that's your fault, I wont renew the policy" helps

Would also be very interested to hear about the company since my own daughter is only a few months away from her 17th.

Local to me is a company that rents out an airfield and runs under-17 driving lessons on it. Sure, it is not a real road but they do a great job of simulating roundabouts and junctions and kids of all ages get a chance to learn the mechanicals and a bit of road craft. Not had discussions with insurance companies yet but am hoping this will have an impact in premiums.

The cover you're getting is for her supervised (i.e. before she passes her test).

It'll be two grand when she's passed (and on her own).

I very much doubt it; i did pass plus, it has zero effect on my premium.

You wouldn't believe how many people have fallen into this trap.

Agreed.

The companies that offered a discount were so priced out the market anyway no reduction less than 90% would make them competitive.

The quote is obviously for her being supervised but as mentioned I already have indicative quotes from 3 seperate companies including Diamond and admiral for when she does pass all for around £1050-£1200.

I have been looking at getting quotes for my diesel focus over the weekend. Most are around 1k, and I have 8 years no claims, if you can get new driver cover for that I would jump at it.

Not always. My Old man put 80k on a Clio 1.5 Dci in the space of 2 and a half years. Was painfully slow but pretty good on fuel and apart from routine servicing and tyres, nothing went wrong.

Also, OP try getting a quote with Bell (Part of the Admiral Group) when your daughter passes. I've always been pleasantly surprised with them, especially after I added my parents as named drivers.

It was about 4 years ago but I seem to remember about 60 mpg on a run was fairly common.

I was with them when I was learning, when I passed they didnt want to know. I was talking to someone when I was learning and they said they were founded by mini cab drivers.
