Looking to buy something like this for my mother, anyone owned one how was it?

They seem to offer amazing fuel consumption but are they ok to drive and any known reliability issues (it will be more than 4 yrs old).

Mum had one for 3 years, no reliability issue and plenty of grunt when needed. Dull to drive but if it's for the mother then would be a good car!

What was it like going over bumps? where my mum lives the roads are a rutted mess.

The ride wasn't too bad at all, the fuel consumption was brilliant. It didn't hande well when driven enthusiastically but for pooling around town and motorway journeys it was brilliant. Just very boring really.

Don't these share alot of parts with the Smart Forfour? I think the engine is a Mercedes Benz unit and both might have been made in the same factory in Holland, Nedcar, the old Volvo or Daf factory.
