The time has come to part with last years shed and delve back into the deep end of bangernomics.

As the missus is due to drop Mini Mikeyplum Mk2, it was the ideal time to look for something a little more practical than the last shed (see here Clicky)

I was looking for a while and even started a thread for suggestions on what to buy for circa £500 to match the criteria of something that the O/H could ferry around 2 sprogs and their associated bulk.

A random search of Autotrader on my iPhone one night at a gathering with my mates came up with something that might be worth looking at. After a few beers a phone call was made and a viewing the folowing morning at 9.30am was arranged. Looks like my mate would be driving then!

Cue 9am and with a sore head I woke up and hopped in the car with my mate and off we went. On pulling up, the first thing we noticed was the spare wheel, not a big deal but would soon become the least of my worries. The owner came out, polish guy and very nice. Handed me the keys and that's where the fun began.

The car was locked, but the N/S/R passenger door was open. Upon opening the car with the key (no remote central locking) in the drivers side door, the car unlocked, along with all the windows retracting (apart from afore mentioned passenger door). Hmmm... I thought. Lets move on. Tried to open the boot, nope... didn't work. The guys OH had to come and show us how to open it with the key. Well, at least it opened.

Moving on, I started the car first time which was a good sign. The car sounded like an asthmatic donkey on a 10k run. Panting and constantly hunting for idle. Checked the Oil and all seemed fine, engine ran smoothly with no knocks or taps when revved.

Onto the body work. A little rough around the edges. Clearly a respray on some areas, bumper, and rear quater. Two front tyres were just legal but apart from that, everthing looked ok.

My main worry was that it had no MOT, but there wasn't really anything, MOT wise, that I thought needed doing. Apart from a set of wipers. So I decided to take a punt. It was advertised for £450, but I was none to keen to pay that for it!

Anyway, eventually done a deal and £350 later, drove the car to the nearest MOT station (honest guv). It subsequently failed on:

- N/S Track rod end worn
- O/S Strut Top Mount worn
- Two front tyres (dubious fail, mind)
- Rear boot won't open (it will, but i had to show them how hehe)
- Rear tyre different size to that of the other on the same axle (it was the spare)
- Emissions (intake, not lambda, dodgy MAF I reckon)

All in all not too bad for the price I paid. Going to get the work done for the MOT ASAP and get it taxed. Will eventually get round to doing the gremlins in the central locking (most likely a fecked locking mech) and other niggly bits. But, should be a good steed for the coming year.

Specs
VW Bora S 1.6 Petrol
105BHP
39.8Mpg combined (doubt that very much)
Insurance Group 6
V Reg 1999
138k miles
Not much of a service history, just a few old MOT certificates.

So how much are you going to need to spend on top of the purchase price to get it through an MOT?

I got a citroen c5 this year, 2.2 diesel, y reg 103k for £500 with full service history and mot/tax.
Seller used it for patient transport so serviced every 6000 miles at main dealer, last year he put new brake pads/disk and tyres all around.
My last shed was a saab 9-5 2.3se, s reg , 130k last 7 years service history that cost £700 and worked fine, passsed mot fine.

So far I have purchased:
- Track rod end £9.50
- Top Mount £10.50
- MAF Sensor £20

Tyres, well, I'll either chuck two part worns for £15-£20 each, or, as I have another PD130 TDI Bora, I might put those wheels on it and get some new wheels for the TDI biggrin

That's some good shedding there mate! thumbup

There were lots of other choices, but this one was 20 minutes away. I didn't particularly fancy driving 2+ hours for a £4-500 shed to be honest!! hehe

There's nothing like passing something new broken down on the motorway in your shed which probably cost half there breakdown cover wink
