Is it just me, or does every now have these on their truck/van/lorry? And always, fking always have them on when theres clearly no reason for it?

Yes, I can see them being helpful if you're in the middle of the road, or going to be manouvouring for whatever reason, or even if you're carrying something pretty abormal.. But it seems every fking idiot has them now and they've lost the 'hazard' meaning.

Rant over, I rate it 3/10.. Not long enough, not enough swearing. Good topic though, imo.

Probably but it seems that half the motroing population are still oblivious to them (along with blue lights, sirens, road signs, road markings, weather conditions....)

Yes especially Council workers. They often drive round in their Transit tippers with them on for no reason.

Agreed. The Fiesta "anti graffiti" cars around Leeds always have them on!

Yes this annoys me too. I've seen a couple of RAC and AA trucks recently with a vehicle on the back just driving normally down lane one of the motorway but still feeling the need to flash their full array of 20 flashing LED lights.

If they're on the hard shoulder then fair enough, but if they're driving normally then if anything they create more of a hazard by blinding people on both carriageways and causing people to slow down.

funny that - I saw one on a Harrow council 'smart' car this very morning. Driving along flashing.

a) what's the point of a smart car having one? (it wasn't even one of those tttish cctv ones)
b) why have it flashing when you're driving along in regular traffic?
c) why am I paying for this with my council tax? mad

It's as bad as hi-viz jackets ! you wear them to make you stand out from the background but it seems like the hole of the country is now hi-viz colour.at least my old recovery jacket still stands out ,hi-viz yellow and orange reflective stripes and built in strobing led's !

I was following a skip lorry a few days ago, he flashed his yellow lights at a tipper coming the other way with his flashing away.. Seems some do know how, and when to use them.

Shame the cretin in the tipper just carried on as normal.

Youve misunderstood J5. Mostly amber beacon heroics are restricted to vans and transit recovery pickups, rather than HGVs.

The driver you saw flashing was actually signalling to the oncoming driver that his beacon was still on, ie that he had forgotten to turn it off after leaving the area where it had to be turned on.

Ive never seen a tell-tale for a beacon in an HGV cab and with all of the noise you cant hear them, so it isnt uncommon to venture out of quarries and roadworks/sites with the compulsary light still on.

Having someone tell you is almost always appreciated. Of course the other driver may not have seen, and some are simply ignorant.

Thats what I mean, chap. Same as flashing at someone whos on main beams..

But the cretin in the tipper didn't turn his off.

A small percentage of drivers just look back at you with a blank look on their face... Id always presumed that they were very new or possibly Eastern European (or just ignorant).
