Pic of the Week: Jaguar XJ220

The 200mph Coventry supercar that looks fast even when standing still

Ah, the XJ220. Yes, it was chucked together in engineers' spare time, no they didn't sell very many and yes, we know the McLaren F1 is faster.

Just look at it, though. Sleek lines, outrageous size, huge presence, and a phenomenal power output (550hp seems a lot even 20 years down the line). It's a textbook supercar.

The fact that it was a financial flop almost even adds to its mystique.

And once you've put this silver supercar loveliness, you can even pop over to our features section and read about why we think the XJ220 makes a worthy PH Hero.

Ps - We know we did an XJ220 a few weeks ago. But come on - just look at it...

The article says that this was a development car and was then a racer. Does anyone have any pictures of the car when it was a development car, and when it was a racer? Thanks.

Amazing looking car and even by todays standards it still manages to look exotic and stylish.

? It was a development of the v64v that powered the majority of the road cars. I have a friend who took out one of the V12 cars when he worked for TWR, nice smile

Every time I read about the XJ220, my mind flashes to the stealth Transit that usually puts in an appearance at Goodwood.

For the record, I'm a fan of both....

Saw one of these at Bruntingthorpe in the 1990s doing some kind of shakedown/test. Very impressive at the time in terms of speed, the way it cornered and general prescence. Always preferred the looks of the XJR-15 though.

This was a long time ago, and I have had a few pints since then to further clog my memory, but it seems that after the initial orders went out at full price, they offered a huge discount but still couldn't sell them. If it was rubbish then, it surely is rubbish now.
