Hi -

just wondering if anyone could clarify the position of plate transfers and insurance?

Having got my V750 - I went to the DVLA office and today and the tax disc has been updated and I've got a new MOT in the new reg, but i'm a little confused as to the status of the insuracne

I.e. having emailed my insurer to let them know of a change of reg (having just put a new plate on the car) am I covered to drive - or do they have to re-issue a new policy with the new reg?

Any ideas?

You need to tell them you have changed your reg. don't bother emailing, call them. If you get picked up on an anpr you will be flagged as uninsured.

Ring insurer and then keep checking the http://ownvehicle.askmid.com/ site to see if they have uploaded the new reg

It can take time to get onto the database which is used by the authorities so until it appears on that site keep your insurers phone number and policy number with you

As expressed above ring to change plate so its on he MID .

And another question in the event of a total loss who owns the rights to the plate you as the owneror the insurance company? I ask this because we run an older passat estate with a valuable plate on ?

Just make sure you transfer the plate before the car's taken back by the insurance company.

If deemed a write off then technically the insurer owns the plate but most insurers will allow the the plate to be retained - the same goes for the road tax

This happened to me when my car was deemed written off in 2008 - Adelaide insurance

When you apply a plate to a car the plate technically becomes the property of the car. In the event of a total loss the whole car including plate transfers to insurance ownership.

However insurance companies should give you a letter stating that they have no interest in the plate which you can send to the DVLA along with the appropriate forms and fees and the plate will be transferred off of the car and put in your name.

I have recently been through this and it's a fairly simple process.
