What to build?

A mate and I have decided to build something stupid and we're looking for suggestions. We want something old and boxey like a Lada or Triumph for the shell (we're trying to build a nutts sleeper) and looking to push out over 350 hp.

We also want to achieve this for as little as possible so suggestions need to be realistic. So enginewise what would people suggest? He was thinking of squeezing an oldish jag engine in, I was thinking of something audi and turbo'd? Are there other obvious options out there we're missing?

We're still unsure whether we want something thats just bonkers in a straight line or something thats going to handle so please suggest whatever.

Triumph or Lada means RWD really, which means Audi stuff will be a bit harder to mount since it doesn't come as standard in RWD.

Engine wise a V8 is a good choice as it's lot as long as a straight 6, so either an early Jag V8 or a Small Block Chevy seem to be good options.

I always fancied a bike engined Lada Riva.
Failing that I'm sure an old t5 lump and drive train Could be picked up fairly cheaply.

All depends on budget of course
