Right guys currently driving a 61 plate audi a6 tdi 170 but frankly its a dull as dishwater to drive and only gets on average 38mpg but the misses likes it, now the intention was to buy a second car in a few months time but going down the man logic route I think I have a better idea.

Now we only work a few miles away from each other and start times are roughly the same so commuting when I am onshore isnt a issue plus we only stay about ten miles away from work. My initial idea was to keep the a6 for family duties and get something like a monaro vxr/jag xkr/ S4 or 5 etc but for most of the time the second car would just be sitting doing sweet fook all, not to mention two lots of car insurance/roadtax/car payments etc.

So the lightbulb came on in my head instead of two cars, we trade in the a6 and buy either a late 2011 S4 or S5, yes both cars are worse on fuel than the a6 is but factor in the lower price of petrol and only running the one car makes sense in my head...........yes the a6 does 38mpg, the S does 22-30 mpg.

So is this proper man logic or am I just trying to convince myself ?

OP, you're doing it wrong.
Your A6 I presume is newish. Buy an 06/07 RS4, 20mpg (same as s4), but less depreciation. Overall cost about the same as the A6, and your sat with a descrete car that is epic.

Agreed. Although you can get a latest gen s4 for 20k or a latest gen s6. Only issue is the s4 you can get manual s6 would be auto. S6 would be in a way better than rs4 as i dont believe its as popular for crims.

Hell you can even get an s8 but it will be quite steep to run i expect both fuel and maintenance as its quite a big beasty.

yeah the rs4 is the car I have lusted after for too long, but with these being the car of choice for car theives it makes me a little un-easy, as when I am working offshore/overseas I can be away for up to 6 weeks so leaving my misses with the car would leave me a little uneasy.

Yeah she loves the rs4 too but its the theft risk that makes it a no no, with is a real shame. I like the idea of the new car as there is no hastle with mot,s , its under warranty plus if it breaksdown it simply gets towed back to the garage, a pain in the ass yes but piece of mind when I am not home.

Erm, you can keep your "man logic" if driving an Audi is where it gets you ... wink

Seriously, why not buy a classic to keep you entertained smile Not sure of your budget but many wonderful old cars can be got for about £10K from a Triumph TR6 to a '60's Ford Mustang 289ci Coupesmile

the classic has been playing at the back of my mind after a guy from work just bought a mint 2002 tii from ireland, it would have to be either a 280 brooklands or a 240z but prices seem to be rising rapidly on both but it still gets back to the two car situation

Don't understand this "you must have a modern if you own a classic" and if you don't think I put my money where my mouth is check my profile smile You'd EASILY get a 280 Brooklands Capri or a 240Z for what your Audi must cost smile

Talking of 240Z's saw one out today, having it large and it looked awesome smilecloud9

yeah and if i was to spend 35 k on a classic it would be a e-type but no good as a joint fun/family car, dont get me wrong I love some of the classics but the whole reliabilty issue comes into mind,MOT,s,rust etc and yes I have been stuck out in the middle of the north sea when the runabout we had broke down............feck all you can do and our family are 3 hours away from where we stay.

Classic cars are no no, as a project in the garage yes but when you have been working your ass off for 6 weeks solid on a boat the last thing I want to do is crawl under a car, no matter even if its a e-type

Why not just trade the Audi in with a Monaro?

Sorry but honestly classic car does NOT = unreliable smile I am here to educate the world this ... rofl Often the "unreliable" ones are the ones that are hardly ever used.

MOT's are not at all scary smile Rust can be a bit of an issue but with a few precautions can be minimised / nothing a good body shop can't sort out! Maintenance costs on the whole would be ALOT less smile Parts are much cheaper, labour at a classic specialist will be cheaper. There is £0 depreciation.

Tempted?! Plus you don't have to spend anywhere near £35K to get something that you don't see very often on the roads and is more fun than a modern could ever be!

Pity the theft factor sways you away from the 4. I looked at the v10 S6 quite long and hard at one point, but after a very generous owner gave eme the keys to his for a bit, I found it didn't tick my boxes. A massively impressive car, it's on a par with the M5 for impressing you re. how such a big heavy car can do what it does. Sadly, that big and heavy part ruined it for me. Oh, and more like 17 to the gallon! Sounds lush tho, as long as it doesn't change gear when your listening =)
