DSG vs. Tiptronic

Bit of a problem, have put down a deposit on a 2007 Passat Estate 2.0 TSi and what I believed to be a DSG gearbox, I have since found out that the car has a standard 6 speed tiptronic gearbox. On the test drive, it changed promptly and smoothly.

The car is perfect for us and is good spec, colour and mileage.

What would you do? Is the tiptronic ok?

If you're happy with it, keep it, and read the spec sheet properly next time.

Thanks for your comment, but the dealer advertised it as having DSG!!!!

I'm pretty sure it will be a DSG - they are 6 speed as well.

Don't think there was a conventional auto box available on the 2007 Passat with that engine (although I could well be wrong) and it definitely will not be Multitronic, no Passat has ever had CVT

This is good news for you. Use it as leverage to get more money off the car. If they refuse, get your deposit back and walk away - they won't refuse.

I'm not entirely sure but don't vag only use tiptronic boxes in a 4wd layout? If I'm right, and I'm not sure, it would be either a variant of the multitronic box or indeed dsg if it's a fwd passat.

As far as im aware, tip is for the 4wd and DSG/multi tronic etc for 2wd.

I seem to remember on Passats the gearchange actually had DSG on the handle... thats a clue

That model isn't based on the A4 platform so the 4wd/tip 2wd multi doesn't apply. 2007 Passat is built on an extended Golf mk5 FWD platform.

As Cupramax said above, DSG is in transverse engined Passats and Tiptronic in in the older inline engined cars

Ah, that clears that up. For me at least! Sorry op!

So they have an inline engine, torque converter and front whel drive. I didn't know that!

No, its transverse fwd on the car the op is talking about... 2007 Passat is Golf chassis based.

I dont think they ever had a tiptronic box in the passat.

They were just early and late versions of DSG.

my wife has dsg on her audi a3 and it is light years ahead of a regular auto. as other posters have said, use it as a point of negotiation.

Old Passats used the same floorpan as the B5 Audi A4 which used a longitudinal engine. While with the latest model this changed to a Golf based chassis which is transverse engine.

transverse means across the engine bay, inline means 'front to back' like, say, a BMW straight 6.
