Dear all

Looking at diesel supermini`s preferably with a 1.6 diesel engine to take advantage of cheap RFL,fuel economy and a bit more performance.I should add we are looking at new or nearly new probably on PCP.

We are considering the following cars with the Peugeot coming in at about 2-3k less than the competition. However swmbo is discounting the pug on the basis of you get what you pay for?

So I would welcome your thoughts, opinions, experience?

Peugeot 1.6HDi Allure

Ford Fiesta 1.6TDCi

Seat Ibiza 1.6TDi Sportrider

Mini One D or Mini Cooper D?

What is the budget? Overall costs maybe lower with the Mini if counting depreciation and servicing.......

Fiesta in zetec-s trim for me. They are a good drive and have the nicest interior. The ibiza is not a bad choice just a rather dull place to sit. I wouldn't touch the 207, they are ok to drive but it will fall to peices and the interiors seem to ruff up really easily. It wont take much use before it looks rally scruffy.

Yes fair point Mike we are thinking about £250 per mth so doubt we can stretch to the mini.

My Cooper D is £260 on a business 3 year deal, with a few extras (leather, wheels, paint). Not sure you'll get close to that on a private deal with VAT involved.

Might not be what your thinking, but how about a Suzuki Swift 1.6?

Nice little car but the £20 per yr RFL and economy of the diesel is too strong a pull.

Do they not still do the 1.3DDis in the Swift? Felt as quick as my 1.5 petrol, 50mpg and £35pa road tax (2 year ago mind)

You're welcome, I had my 1.5 petrol for 2 years and loved it, the diesel was a cracking car but out of budget at the time (in traditional PH manner I swapped it for an MX-5)

I'm looking at Fabias at the moment - the same 1.6TDI as in the Ibiza. Not new and not PCP for me, but if you are going new, Skoda are doing a no VAT offer at the moment.

I reckon the new fabia will be a good car but im struggling with its looks to be honest. The older car without doubt looked much better.

I know exactly what you mean, but the more I look at them, the more it's growing on me... Looks quite funky in Monte Carlo trim smile

Just remember that the 207 is about to be replaced with the 208, so either you'll look at it in a way that you'll have 'last seasons' car, or that you'll get a better deal. Also, on that same note, Geneva suggests the Fiesta is due a face-lift soon.

The Peugeot and Fiesta share the same engine with the diesel MINIs. The 207 is 200kg heavier than the 207 and it's fairly noticeable, the Fiesta is only about 50kgs heavier than the MINI. I don't know what the Fords is like, but the Peugeot gearbox is a let down and the steering could feel 'tighter'. It also feels more like you're sitting on it, rather than in it, but they're all fairly upright, so may well be similar.

when i was looking at new cars i test drove the ibiza and the fiesta. The ibiza was brilliant full of kit, alot more than the fiesta i tried, both are pretty samey to drive cause they have electric power steering. it was down to the finance deal

the ibiza was £199 for a 1.6 derv sport with £199 deposit. the fiesta was £208 a month with a 2k deposit.

Personally ide choose a ibiza, they always have the vat off deal, and spec with xenons and alloys.

alternatively, try the fabia, same car as a ibiza and cheaper

Mazda 2? 1.4 diesel IIRC, but a nice light car so little lost in terms of performance. Nice looking cars too.

ALTHOUGH...do they still offer it with a diesel? Not sure on that one...
