I am having some new plates made up as I am putting on a private plate on to my car. The supplying dealer (Jaguar) have told me they can no longer do plates with borders as they are illegal. My current plate made by the same dealer but a couple of years old has the borders on it but they have told me that older plates are fine its just that new plates made up can't have the borders?

Can anyone confirm this is true? I'm getting the feeling they are saying this because they can't do the borders anymore smile ?

Thanks lads. They are sticking to their word and say they can't do it. Ah well never mind it's only a border smile

Just thought it looks a bit better with a border on that shaped plate biggrin

And not my plate is not CAT 1 it spells my name in a perfect way wink

You really should inform them that they're being ridiculous, I mean, that's almost your civic duty, isn't it? hehe

To reiterate, yes, completely legal and many many places will do it.

It would be better to read the specific requirements which are set out in a British Standard specification and referred to in the legislation. Look at the fourth bullet point in the list below.

BSAU 145D sets out the physical characteristics on the number plate. This includes:
Visibility
Strength
Reflectivity
The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information,

  • The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
  • The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
  • The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
  • A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
  • There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

The dealer fitted plates on my car have a border, been through three MOT's with them, never been raised as an issue. Not strictly scientific, I realise, but hope it helps.

Ten years on, there are revised rules for borders:

8. A border may be displayed on a registration plate where the border is—
(a) permanently marked;
(b) non-retroreflecting;
(c) of a single shade of non-retroreflecting colour without any design, pattern or texture;
(d) positioned no closer than 10 millimetres from the edge of any character of the registration mark;
(e) not positioned above any other markings; and
(f) no more than 5 millimetres in width.”.
