Hi, I'm going to see a Polo tonight for my son. I'm wondering if anyone can help advise on what i should be looking out for please.

Volkswagen Polo 1.2 Twist Special Edition, 5 Door Hatchback
Metallic Black, Petrol, Manual.
High spec special edition: Climatic control air conditioning, Alloy wheels, CD player, Electric front windows, Side Airbags
Standard items such as Drivers airbag, ABS, Immobiliser, Folding rear seats.
Full Service History (just been serviced), 12 months MOT and taxed till end of May. Also new timing chain fitted (expensive job) and recent new front discs and pads, All 4 tyres are hardly used.
Very good condition.
One very small stone dent on bonnet (difficult to show on a picture).
Two previous owners. Current lady owner.
Very economical and reliable, quality, high spec, great car to drive.
This is the info he has emailed about the car
We have had the car for a year. In that time it has been checked-over and serviced by a ex-VW mechanic, and there are no known faults or issues, other than very minor cosmetic wear and tear bodywork items (as mentioned). It was stated as HPI clear when we bought it (some check paperwork avaialable) and it has not been involved in any accident whilst we have owned it.
It has been a reliable to us (my wife uses it to run the kids about). Whilst we have owned it, it has had the front break discs and pads changed, a CV boot done and also the timing chain changed (the timing chain seems to be a common issue on this engine, and if not replaced can off-course be a big issue). The mechanic also reported that some supsension parts (not sure on detail but think bushes and dampers??) seem to have been previosly changed - again these are reported as a common fault).
The car is good to drive and has a quality feel (as with most VW's). I understand your quesions as I also need to be sure when I buy a car. We would not sell a car privatelly if any key known issues. If you have any further questions, please let us know
He is asking £3250 for it - does that sound about right?

What age is it and what mileage? I assume you are talking about a 9N or mk6 which is 2002>2007
A relative of mine has had a 2003 1.2 since new and has just gone and bought a brand new polo to replace it. In all the time she has had a clutch change (due mostly to her driving more than anything) and general service items.
Known issues appear to be more irritating niggles than anything, the cup holders getting stuck, the seat belts being squeaky/not recoiling properly, the steering knuckle/UJ squeaking or grinding, the electric window runners failing and problems with the stereo system display.
For reference, 2002 models with circa 100k start at £1500, VW offered my relative £1700 part Ex for hers on 45k 1 owner, similar models sell for around £2000-3000 depending on mileage.

Ironically, given that manufacturers have been swapping out Cam belts for chains in a bit for better reliability, this particular engine seems to have a propensity for snapping / stretching them just like a traditional cambelt!
See here for more details on what to watch out for....

Don't let that put you off though, the fact its been done is probably a good thing.

It seems dear, but Polo's are.
We recently p/x'd daughter's 54 reg 50K mile 1.2S Ibiza, which is the same car. We owned it from new, but it had picked up a number of cosmetic dings and dents (mainly from being parked in school playgrounds as daughter is a teacher). Difficult to tell the exact price as it was p/x but I reckon we got about £1850 for it and I think I would have struggled to sell it for over £2K.
