I've just been offered a lift somewhere tomorrow on the back of a motorbike. I've never been on th back of a bike before. Althoughh I have a karting helmet and leather gloves I only have jeans and a normal, thin leather jacket at my disposal, which leaves me slightly worried if something should happen on the way from Bristol to Llandow and back.
Am I being paranoid? (If my parents found out I am contemplating going on a bike with no PPE I'd probably be disowned....)

I haven't been on one since about 1982, which must explain why I am still here.

yes, almost certainly. my most terrifying experience was being on the back of a moped driven along a gravel track in Greece by a 17 year old who had failed his driving test by crashing into a police car

I would not get on the back of a bike with anyone and I'm a biker myself . If you are at all nervous as a passenger in a car you'll hate it. On the other hand I've had people on the back of me in the past who've urged me to go as fast as possible and have got off the back grinning like a Cheshire cat despite my best efforts to scare them.

I wont mention the speed but I used all of the power and as many of the gears as I felt it safe enough to do so on a dual carriageway with a 'thrill seeker' on the back and they loved every second of it even the time spent on one wheel

Getting on the back of a motor bike - you have to be certifiable.

Doing it without proper gear - looney tunes.

in Wales - RIP.

definitely dead!

  • I take people on the back of my bike and always ride very carefully, just make sure you and the rider are on the same wavelength and you'll be fine!

Always remember,

- when passengering, look over the shoulder inside of the corner.
- Agree a system of one tap means slow down, two taps means speed up. Lots of taps reapeatedly means "I'm scared...".
- As long as the rider accounts for the extra mass, you'll be fine.

Thin jacket and jeans is a bit daft IMHO.

Once had a pal who was advised he would need to lean into the corners while he was a passenger.

He got the instruction spot on.

Unfortunately at the first corner where he had to lean he leant the WRONG way - How the rider kept the bike on the road amazes me to this day smile

If you're worried about it before you get on then I would imagine you will most likely poo yourself.

I myself have never been on the back of a bike because of a combination of lilly-liveredness and the likelihood of my generous downward force creating stationary wheelies

What size is the bike?

If your a total newbie, then some people can find a 125 frightening...

Depends who the driver is and how much you trust him / her!

Oh, and try to borrow some proper clothing in any event.
