Am I missing something? Dab of Oppo mag wax lyrical about the previous 225bhp model being so smegging brilliant. Yet they're seriously cheap money for the motor. Is there a catch? Or is it just typical frog depreciation in action?

Bit of an ugly moo of a car.

Renault's crappy reliability rep. Perceived expensive running costs. Slightly dodgy image and limited appeal.

Basically, loads of niggly little reasons why joe public isn't interested.

And therefore loads of reasons to buy one.

From an honest opinion what are they like though, do they have the crap french quality & are the expensive to run/maintain?

It is an 'old' French hatchback. Nothing more.

Sure, a decent steer maybe, but why should it hold it's value over any other car of that era?

I'd expect it's high for a reason.

We looked at several cheap ones and they all had serious faults. Settled on a Clio 182 instead which has been good so far.

The F1 230 is supposed to be massively better than the 225 thanks to a LSD.
AFAIK Renault picked up on the quality around 04-05, massively so.
Brilliant cars, I`d love one.

When the R26.R was launched, Renaultsport were worried they couldnt shift them all and offered huge incentive discounts in order to shift them. I think there was a bloke here on PH who picked up a brand spanking new one for something like 16 grand!
Try finding one in europe now for below 30.000 pounds..

Has to be bargain of the decade..

Old is subjective. Anything built this century is not old IMO.

Yes, apparently it's a real bh of a job. Some none specialist indpendants won't even do it by all accounts.

Just double checked. It's actually £1200 for a main dealer service and cambelt, but a specialist indie such as K Tech Racing still want £890 for the same!

Edit: I looked at buying one about 4 years ago, and the servicing costs are pretty eye watering in general.

Thankfully cam chains are now back in fashion as belt changes can make cars unviable to service when they get too old hence belts not changed they snap bang engine fubar
