Why is it every pic of a VX220 on PH It's broken. It's either broken in half, on it's roof or stuffed in a ditch/hedge. I know they're based on the Elise but I don't see so many of them crashed, did Vauxhall change something for the worse?

Are they the modern day "widow maker"?

If anything the chassis is set up to be easier to drive than an S1 Elise, probably on a par with the S2.

Maybe the Vauxhall badge opened the car up to more "mainstream" buyers, Or maybe it's because the turbo was both relatively powerful and a bit laggy, making it harder to accurately judge throttle input.

They're cheaper than elises, so perhaps more accessible to younger drivers?

Also, a basic VX220 has more power than a basic elise i believe. (NA 2.2 vs NA 1.8)

They're also a chunk heavier too; power to weight ratio is similar.

Lotus got more factory support too, there never was a Vauxhall recall for things like the suspension bolts braking for example which has caused a few accidents.

And most of the extra weight is at the rear...

A snapped hub carrier bolt caused my first one to be introduced to a lamp post - issue on the Elise S1 too.
Big power to weight, means lots of spinning wheels in the wet.
Cheaper insurance so younger drivers.
Value of the car - very easy to write one off even if you damage just a couple of panels.

They're f'ing brilliant though.

I thought they were both quoted as 39/61 wet with no driver?

I used to have a 111R elise. The handling balance is similar to a throwing axe: sod all at one end, everything at the other. They are just waiting to spin out. I suspect the mangled VX220s may have met their fate exiting a wet roundabout!

They are performance cars but alot of people use them as daily drivers compared to the elise.

The ABS is maldesigned so you either turn it off or take the risk of it cutting your brakes exactly when you need them most (it pretty much turns the brakes completely off).

People modify them ALOT (for example 380bhp is fairly cheaply achievable using the GM superchargers made exactly for the engine they use, almost straight bolt on), they are almost all used on track and the clubs are very performance tuning and track orientated.

When they lose rear grip they dont drift smoothly like an FR car, they hold on to the last second and then completely lose it, and unless youre lucky or very experinced oppo aint gonna save you when the rear wheels are already in front of you.

Mine was killed when a tit drove into me going round a roundabout, it was quite a light tap but fibreglass is very unforgiving and the car nearly undressed itself to the aluminium frown
I drove mine as a daily driver and found that it was a car you had to keep thinking about driving, you couldnt switch off and do the commute type driving, if you did you got snapped out of it by a moment of terror when you suddenly had to brake and the ABS had turned this ability off, or something similar.

So easily damaged, and also the cost is a big factor in why they are written off alot, the parts are rare and totally mental prices, if you broke both headlights and nothing else your car could be an economic write off.

IIRC, the old Lotii used to have 16" front wheels and 17" rears, but Vauxhall thought it to be less than aesthetically pleasing, so went with 17" all round, and (allegedly) lost some of that sharp turn in that the smaller wheeled Elise had.

I thought the N/A VX220 was 37/63? The turbo version had an iron block engine as well, so along with the turbo and extra pipework I'd be surprised if that wasn't a little worse again.

Mine wasnt broken. Probably explains why it sold in less than a week.

Scary when that happens! Going to have a switch put in to my ABS system tomorrow so I can turn it off.

Same, ABS is shocking.

Mine feels very safe in terms of handling, never even getting close to oversteer.

They are absolutely mental dangerous. Only a highly-skilled-big-balled-driver could possibly manage to use one as a daily commuter for the last 4 years without incident or accident. whistle

Had the switch fitted and the brakes feel fantastic now! Would really really recommend it.
