Grandads car - what's it worth?

Sorry but it is not exotic, but my grandad has recently decided that he is going to give up driving in the next few weeks, and not renew his driving licence. I have not seen him drive for years, but can remember even 20 years ago it was petrifying being in the car with him, so is about time, preferably before I see him on tv driving the wrong way around the M25!
Back to the car, it is a blue 1990 Ford Escort eclipse 1600. I have not seen it for a while, but it will be immaculate, as his cars always are. Less than 40,000 miles, taxed until July, mot'd until January 2013. I would guess has done less than 5000 miles in last 10 years, and still serviced regularly.
So what is a fair figure?
I am not convinced it would reach classic status (I could be wrong), so not sure this would be the best place to pitch it. I am thinking perhaps the first time car market may be better?

That's the sort of thing you need to aim at Ford enthusiasts - but be prepared for it not being worth as much as you'd imagine.

It was IMMACULATE - there was still plastic on the rear strap/grabs, the rear seats were unused and the interior still smelled new!! It eventually found an owner for a lot less than you'd imagine (but a LOT more than a 97 Vectra would normally be worth!) but it took a lot of forum bashing and other work to get to that point.
Sticking it on eBay might be a shortcut - put a 'slightly high' BiN on it but accept offers, that way you'll get an idea of what people are thinking it's worth without having to sell it.

I'd stick it on www.carandclassic.co.uk, and see how it goes, especially if there's no rush to sell it.

It's worth what someone will pay for it (stupid answer but in this case entirely the right one)In the event you auction it - it's worth what TWO people are willing to pay for it - of course
Really tho, it's almost entirely in the eye of the buyer - all you can do is look at comparable cars which have sold for an idea of what people will stretch to.

I don't know how much better your grandad's car than that but I don't think that one is really worth anything. Selling it will be probably be more trouble than it's worth.Same as this but less miles and better condition:-

Get a few stray cod liver oil capsules in the footwell and an AA badge bolted the grill for maximum impact, have fond memories at 12 being driven to the east coast in a 740SE auto @ 45mph safe in the knowledge the recent Continentals all round were replaced because the tires previous "were getting a bit old". Good luck with the sale!
Providing it's genuinely immaculate, a grand might not be unreasonable. I've seen a mk4 Escort estate (1.4L I think) that was a minter for 3 grand (don't think it sold though) but also a 1.6 GL or some such for either 1,200 or 1,500 and that definitely sold. Both properly immaculate.
I would around 500.. Mileage wise, 40k is in the area where it is of note but not showroom fresh. There is a guy down the road from me selling a late 60s Mini with under 3k miles on the clock, he has had bids of 8k plus now without even marketing it publicly. I would conservatively estimate if you put it on auction site for a couple of weeks you could make late hundreds.. Any more than that will be because somebody has an emotional attachment to one and things have all fallen into place to mean they are there looking when you are selling and have the readies..
