The plan is, buy insurance, drive to pre-booked MOT appointment, then go buy tax. Any 'gotchas' I might have forgotten?
Is 'un-SORNing' just a case of buying a tax disc?
Also can I get a tax disc using my green and blue V5? I'm not sure I have a new red one yet.

Doubt his new MOT will show on the database for him to be able to tax it online

Online also means you can't tax it until the 1st of the month and it then takes a few days to arrive so you either risk it or lose a few days. Annoyingly, you can't buy tax any earlier as it backdates to the beginning of the month you buy in.

I'm eager so I'm just going to tax from beginning of March and lose a couple of weeks.

I'm doing the same thing in a week or two.

Insure car from day of MOT,
Pass MOT (Hopefully!)
Walk to post office and put tax on.

I taxed a sorned car sameday it received an mot, so either it updates instantly or they only look for insurance.

From the last time this came up, you can't drive from the MOT centre to the post office to buy the tax. Go straight home and walk to the post office.

Or post yourself and your car there.

I did do it a couple of times and wasn't thrown in prison, but it is illegal, and if a particularly officious member of the public saw your car parked with no tax disc you could be on for a rubbish afternoon.

Apparently the nearest post office is 0.5 miles away so I think I'll walk from the garage and be a good boy...

Your first thoughts were right. Buy the insurance a couple of days before booking the MOT to make sure that the insurance then appears on DVLA's computer. Then, once you have your MOT you should be able to tax on-line almost immediately.

Cheers all, went off without a hitch. First time the Caterham has been on the road for other two years! Shame about the weather yesterday, I have now ran out of dry clothes!
