Hey guys,

First time poster, long time reader here. Having just sold my MX-5 due to an expanding family I'm in need of a new car. Due to money being tied up in other things I have exactly 1,000 to spend on a car. I was looking at something fun to drive, good on fuel and enough room for a baby seat in the back. All help will be muchly apreciated.

Citreon Xsara VTS. I wouldn't get too focussed on a particular car or you'll spend ages looking for one.

I'm in the same boat at the moment.
Everytime I think I've made my mind up what i would like I change it again. Mine's only going to be a work hack, so I'm not really that fussed as long as it's reliable. thumbup

Those are quite nice. Good advice too.

Replaced my MX-5 with a Puma, can't think of anything better for a bag of sand, an equivalent Fiesta would be more practical though, just get one that isn't too rotten on the rear arches.

At this price it's pointless looking for a specific car.

Just look on Ebay / AT / Gumtree and see what comes up.

Sometimes you can find great bargains that you hadn't considered.

Certainly could, in fact, if you can sacrifice the fuel economy (not sure of your mileage) there are oodles of V6 ones in nice specs. Needn't be eBay either.

I should know, anyway hehe

I've had one for 8 years now and it just keeps going. Really nippy, great handling and has never went wrong. I have actually been really surprised by it to be honest.

I just sold a really minty 2.0 SE Bora for 620, superb value, honestly it wasnt far off like new to look at but people will spend three times that on a bazzed up, worn smooth 130 tdi Golf, with 190k on that uses as much (expensive) engine oil as diesel (also more expensive). What you want is lookd after but unloved models, don't try to compete for anything trendy, iconic or diesel, my recommendation would be a Petrol engined Japanese car,

Not the prettiest but probably reliable and a little bit different.

Also, the previous Gen Saab 9-3, I had an LPT and it was a great car, not the last word in handling but a nice drive, lovely engine, not too bad on fuel and felt like a much more expensive car, would have another, preferred it in some ways to the one that followed.

Look for something that someone is struggling to sell due to the markets utter fixation with diesel, contrary to what people think, it isnt free motoring !

Is it wrong that I quite like that Honda?

I assume the seller is dreaming a bit when he says he's selling a 2k car for that price?
