The 'new car' smell.

Do manufacturers purposely give their new cars a particular smell? I've noticed that cars from the same manufacturer have the same smell, regardless of the different interior materials used, place of assembly, or price of the car. I can only assume that it's done on purpose, maybe they have teams of scientists concocting these smells with chemicals which create a feeling of happiness and therefore help to encourage a sale?

B&Q sell a 'new car smell' air freshener, it's not the same when your car is full of McDonalds waste and rattles like a box of mice though.

i used to support a company that made and tested glues and bonding materials for car manufactures incl BMW they had a huge test lab including artificial ageing equipment, colour and smell where as important as there ability to stick things

that happens in all labs, stability testing samples etc, as they don't want the glue to fail. You also have accelerated testing, this nothing special.

All Rover's have the same smell for some reason. Dad used to have a 600, looked at buying a 200 a few years back and test drove half a dozen and had a 25 for a rental once. They all smelt exactly the same.
