Swift Sport or Colt Ralliart?
Discussion
Hi, wondered what peoples opinions were for my current dilemma.
I'm getting itchy feet as is usual after 6 months and have been having a scout around at what I could get for 7k, which is what my current Fabia vRS cost and the most I'm prepared to spend.
Having had some fun back in a smaller car, but missing the extra revs etc of a petrol, and also wanting something a bit newer, ive managed to find 2 possible cars; a Suzuki Swift Sport and a Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart. Both are 59 plates and come in on budget, and appeal to me as left field choices (already had a Mini so don't want another). After having 32 cars, also I've never owned anything by either Suzuki or Mitsubishi and the idea of something new quite appeals, as I've done the VW group to death and don't want another Ford, Vauxhall, etc.
So, which out of the above 2 would you pick? And why? Any plusses, minuses or personal experiences gratefully taken on board.

For me, the Swift.
All of the reviews I have read have suggested the the Swift is an absolute hoot to drive, and Evo in particular adored that car.
The Colt on the other hand, is often lamented for inert handling and poor steering feel. The engine is stronger and torquier, but I can imagine enjoying the Swift more. Plus the Swift looks better inside and out imo. Try both and decide for yourself... coming from a diesel, if you don't adjust your driving style, the Swift's power delivery may irritate you.

Coming from a boosted engine to a revvy na lump in my opinion was a bit of a kick in the tits. I'd go for the Colt personally judging on your past experience, test drive both. The colts are relatively easy to get decent power figures out of aswell if you ever dabbled into the tuning world. Perfect sleepers!
Had a Swift sport
great car, nice looking including interior
although dash etc is hard plastic i dont mind
nice drivers seat
good steering and responsive engine, but not mega fast
great in traffic, and the fun is keeping it going fast!
mpg for me averaged 34/35 mpg
only downside, was the lack of a sixth gear
gearbox is fairly low geared, and fifth gear was a bit noisy on motorways etc
i would have another though, as i treat it with no respect, and it never failed me

A topic I can honestly answer, having had both as Demo's! Covering about 8k in each.
The swift:
Better on Fuel
Comfier Ride
Nicer interior
Better Standard B Lane Weapon
Lovely Shift
The Colt:
Fun on boost
When lowered (35mm) will outhandle lots
Amazing Brakes
Funky Looks - Not many around
Remove the BB for Boost, instant 25hp gain - Free and works fine
It really is dependant on the driving your going to be doing. The Colt will have an engine more along the lines of the VRS your driving, more flexible, but the colt likes to be revved and driven hard!

Ralliart is light powerful and easily mapped. So wins on a performance point. I also don't mind the looks of them, although the interior is nothing to write home about.
However....... one point of yours:
So logically:
-does it matter which you get? In 6 months time get the other one
-or maybe look at more appropriate cars that you won't be bored of 6 months later.
If you are getting bored and wanting to change every 6 months you are:
-either continually buying the wrong cars
-have way too much time and money on your hands
-a combo of the above two points
So my advice would be to buy neither!
Instead sit back and figure out exactly what it is you want from a car, what you need and what your past 32 have failed to deliver.
Write it all down and then analyse it and see if one car will be able to do everything or if you need two.
Then when that's all done, try and find cars (even more left field ones) that actually match up with the items on your list.

I don't honestly think either will interest you for more than 6 months.I'm getting itchy feet as is usual after 6 months and have been having a scout around at what I could get for 7k, which is what my current Fabia vRS cost and the most I'm prepared to spend.

Agree with this, in 7 years I've only had two cars, and i only got my current car because i crashed the first one However....... one point of yours:

I guess there are two types of ph'er those who love cars and want to try new ones all the time, and those who love cars and get attached to their current steed. i'm definitely the latter!
Drove both, chose the Colt (actually the CZT which is the previous model, but much the same as the Ralliart AFAIK).
Swift handles better (brilliantly IMO), but is *much* slower, and very buzzy at m-way speeds (though the new one has an extra gear I think).
On the road I reckon acceleration > handling, since you are rarely driving around at the limit of grip (are you?).
The comments about "lack of feel" are wrong. The steering is heavier than in many cars, which feels odd to start with, but it does not lack feel. Nice small wheel though means I rarely have to shuffle steer.
It does understeer rather easily, but that's the nature of the beast. Looks a bit funny but really surprisingly spacious inside. Great fun and surprises a lot of larger, expensiver cars. Mine's now on 85K miles and has been pretty good - a couple of electrical faults in that time, nothing else.
Try 'em both and see...

I know you said you didnt want another Mini.. But the Mini is far superior to the Colt on all levels. Better built, more tunable, parts readily available. We used to own a CZT which is really just a pre-facelift Ralliart. Horrible little thing. The Colt would be a huge step backwards - some itches are best left alone!
I test drove a CZT Colt when it first came out. awful!
I bought a VRS Fabia new instead. A few months later my brother bought a Swift Sport, nice handling car but underpowered.
Way ahead, is remap the Fabia. www.angeltuning.com
Or go for something 180BHP plus. Anything else is a step backwards IMO

I noticed that everyone who doesn't like the colt has been very non-specific about why. What gives?
Best power/weight ratio and acceleration in its class... I liked the swift but it's not in the same league speed wise. Nor is the interior any more special, or the economy any better, or the ergonomics better, or the car more practical. I am confuzzled.
