20k spend for max bhp/performance?

Hi All,

I was trawling thru the classifieds (as no doubt many of us do) and I was utterly amamzed at what could be bought (bhp wise) for under 20k.

I mean Aston's with V12's under the bonnet? OMG - I had no idea the DB7's had dropped so low wrt price!

Then there are the SL55 AMG's and SLK55 AMG's...utterly bonkers bang for your 'buck', surely?

Are there better performance bargains to be had than these for 20k? Or under??

I'm sure there are loads of links if you look hard enough. Although most such cars will be one off's or limited numbers.

But for example you might find a Cobra replica with a 500hp V8, a TVR Chim with a 6.2 litre LS3 in, as someone mentioned above a modified Monaro with a supercharger. This of course would also follow for Corvettes, Camaro's and Trans Am's, with hp ranging from a stock 350 to 600+ for modified ones.

No shortage of supercharged Mustangs about, they tend to run 400-500hp. You might if very lucky find a 2003/4 Mustang Cobra, already supercharged from the factory. I've seen 3 of these over the past couple of years for 10-13k, lots of easy mos you could then do yourself to get 500-1100hp.

MKIV Supra's and R32/33 GT-R Skylines would also be a sensible bet for big power, anything from 400-800hp.

I do agree there are a lot of nice standard cars available for 20k with good performance (BMW M5, M3, Aston's maybe, Jag XKR's, Merc AMG's).

But if it's real bang per buck, then modified or custom is the way to go.

I would be wary of the AMG Mercs with that budget. They might look clean from the outside but wait till you put them on ramps and have a good look under.

A 20k Aston is unlikely to be a bargain if you actually want it to perform (see 15k shoot out in this months Evo). I would want to have another 20k in the bank if running one of these beauties. As for big AMG Mercs, mate of mine has the SL AMG and his costs are truly eye watering. My choice for 20k performance would be the ubiquitous 911. A very good late 996 Carrera S would get my vote.

The 996 Turbo's have seriously dumped cash...how much lower will they go, and are they THAT good? Running costs can't be too bad?? lol
