Mercedes SL65 AMG: Long live the V12

If you're worried about engine downsizing, take heart from Merc and AMG, who are still keen on big V12 roadsters

If you thought there were enough fast versions of the new Mercedes SL roadster, with the V8 SL500 and SL63 AMG, Mercedes thinks you are wrong, because it's keeping twin-turbo V12 power at the top of the new SL range with the SL65 AMG.

Just as with the old model, the SL65 AMG gets a twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12, but this time the engine has become the M279 rather than the M275. To justify thee 'new' code designation, new exhaust gas turbochargers have been fitted, with an increased spiral cross-section, new manifolds and wastegate ducts.

The result is an extra 18hp, bringing the SL65's power to 630hp, with 738lb ft of torque. Combined with a serious spot of weight saving (a consistent theme across the new SL range, and 170kg in the case of new SL65 versus old), that brings a 0-62mph sprint in 4.0 seconds, and 0-125mph in 11.8 seconds. Top speed, as ever, is limited to 155mph.

Other points to note with the new SL65 AMG are the presence of the 7-speed Speedshift 7G-tronic plus auto (the first time this gearbox has been seen in an SL65, and stop-start functionality, another SL 65 first.

For the most part, the rest of the SL65 is pretty much as per the rest of the SL range, Chris Harris's first drive of which you can read here.

The new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG will arrive in the UK this autumn, though UK pricing and specifications are still to be confirmed.

Awesome. Very happy that cars like this are still made.

It is worth remembering that car makers these days have to think about a market that is very different to ours.

In the luxury sector, there are plenty of investors around the world who , when asked which model they are interested in, would always reply " the fastest, most luxurious and expensive model please, whatever that is'.

Suggesting that a V12 may have little advantage over the V8 is irrelevant to these buyers. They just want the biggest.

Surely this has got to be stepping on the toes of the SLS roadster rather? Almost identical performance figures.

Great powertrain, but will the chassis cope? Good day for tyre manufacturers perhaps!

Fab. Love the fact that there is still a place in the world for 630hp, with 738lb ft of torque.

You can never have too much power and torque!

Nice colour, and styling doesn't look as bad in these shots as it did in the first lot of promo pictures. Mercedes just doesn't make particularly attractive cars any more, but I'd take this SL65 over an SLS any day.

"Exhaust gas turbochargers" - is there a reason why they write it like that? I thought that's how all turbochargers worked? Genuine question.

You really should look at the NEDC.

Sounds to me like Riggers just took that out of the press release. It's a very odd way of putting it - all turbos are exhaust gas driven.

Fabulous. I was hoping the SL65 didn't die with the old model and it hasn't! I wonder if it'll be vastly more expensive than the SL63 like last time?

I cant see Mercedes-Benz AMG fitting this engine to the G-Wagon, however the boys at Brabus have already done this with the Fire Breathing GV12 which bumps out 700 BHP. The down side is the £335,000 price tag, ouch!

Hell, I'll never own one but I'm delighted Merc are still producing a V12.

There is a demand for it... I was there last week, Moscow, and the rest of Russia. Blacked out G's still rule.
