Hello,

Just wondering what the reliability of the exige is like - a friend had an elise a few years back and he said it just fell to bits on him!

How long is a piece of string................................................

What age Exige?
What are you going to use it for?
How will it be looked after?
Are you particularly hard on the cars you own?

Day to day usage, I'm not particularly hard on my cars (no track days) just the occasional late night wav - a relatively new model (2nd hand but newish).

They're an awful lot better than they used to be, but if you're looking for something with the design and build quality of a mass-market car, buy a Cayman because the Exige will probably drive you mad with niggling little faults. Having said that plenty of us do use Elises and Exiges as daily drivers; if you're willing to put up with (or be constantly fixing) minor niggles then go ahead. smile

My (2004) Elise has never actually broken down as such, but a variety of things have gone wrong with it that have needed fixing and a load more that anyone particularly perfectionist about their car would want to fix that I haven't bothered.

I did 40K miles in a early S2 Exige. Its a very different beast from the early S2 Elises.

The only fault I had was a stone through the front oil cooler. Other than that it was absolutely bomb proof.
The engine never used any oil and other than discs, pads and tyres the car needed nothing else.

True, every year the build quality has improved (and the car has got heavier).

buy a used one from a dealer. years used warrenty from most and they carry out a good inspection. I would expect less issues S2 toyota one than a early S1

I've covered 72k miles in my S1 Exige - let me down but the once, on a Croft trackday. They do have 'character issues' but what a place to be smile

They do say the S2 Exige is even more reliable wink

Never used a drop of oil? Not trying hard enough!

I ran an S2 Exige for two years, 2005-2006. Used daily, commuting through London, then fun driving and longer trips at the weekends and a little track time. Overall it was a very straightforward ownership, all the usual regular servicing consumables and no nasty surprises. Always seemed to me that there wasn't really a great deal that could go wrong. As you'll probably know, the AO48s don't last very long, and were sometimes hard to source (at least back then).

Should mention that mine was less than a year old when I bought it, so I can't comment on them as a longer term prospect, except to say that they are relatively simple things.
