Ok, so a friend of mine calls me today to say that he is going in for a pretty severe operation (he has recently been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer!) next Wednesday and this is going to put him out of action for quite some time and, he has been told, probably for the remainder of the year.

He said he would really like to get some kind of motoring event in before it becomes impossible for several months and he suggested a skid pan session or a drift experience.

Ignoring the inevitable question of whether anything is available at such short notice (something I am currently looking into as our groups nominated event co-ordinator!), does anyone have any thoughts on what would be good, which is better, are there better or worse locations (travelling not too much of a problem but we're based between Oxford/High Wycombe).

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Mercedes World have that sort of thing available, and due to the time-scale probably the only option.
Brooklands is next door as well.

I did the skidpan course at Castle Combe... but cannot remember the name of the company (possibly Drive-Tech?). It was very good, but a few years ago. Informative and a bit of fun. Not too pricey if I recall. Best of luck to your mate.

Sorry to hear of your friend's troubles, all the best for his op.

A few years ago I did a Caterham slalom day at Silverstone and had a great day. Their website says they're actually at Silverstone on Tuesday. You can't go wrong giving them a call and seeing if they can fit you in late notice, the guys (and girl when I was there) who run the whole thing are an excellent bunch.

It was a while back, but I think we were about 25 people sharing 4 cars doing 2-3min runs obliterating some cheap rear tyres, but with quality instruction on how to shift the weight of the car etc.

Good luck with your search and let us know how it goes.

I did a rally half day up near Oxford somewhere in a Puma. That was good fun, I'd recommend a full day, but skidpan days should give a lot of action for the money

I was just about to suggest one of the Caterham experiences. They are huge fun.

There was a drift car rental company that was based at Santa Pod, can't find the website though. You might be able to rent a Caterham to use at Oulten Park's low-grip drift track
