We live in a cul de sac, its fairly quiet and not very big but it astounds me the speed some people get up to, I am working from home and a neighbour who goes in and out several times a day in a large SUV goes past at a fair rate, enough to have to brake hard on the way in and for the bend in the road on the way out, not sure what speed but it makes a racket. They are probably within or not far over the speed limit but it seems excessive for a resedential cul de sac. A few of the others go a bit fast as well, for me the fact there are several primary school aged kids and younger, numerous cats and dogs, parked cars and some older folk slows me right down.

I think that potentially, in a big, high up, refined car people dont realise how fast they are going, especially with a big, powerful diesel engine and an auto box, get in put foot down and it does it all for you.

I kind of work on the assumption that if you had an incident on your own road that it may make things difficult, the rule of dont st on your own doorstep.

Yes, ours is a well-known rat-run in Cheltenham which cuts out two sets of traffic lights. Consequently, people give it the beans down there (30mph limit) to try and get ahead of the traffic, the daft buggers. It's only a matter of time before someone gets run over - I'm just hoping it's not me or my woofer.

There's generally a good reason why stereotypes exist.

A lad I worked with ran a kid over in his own road. He swears blind he wasn't going fast. All the neighbours, even ones who weren't there, said he was. He nearly got lynched and had to move away.

There's a couple of 'farmer boys' in hot hatches that go up far too fast, otherwise no.

We used to have this ape opposite who spent ages blipping the throttle on his motorbike so he could leave the house at Warp 9. Always struck me that the time he'd spent warming the bike up so diligently could've been spent just setting off earlier and more sedately.

I live on a bus route on a big hill with a couple of access routes to one of the less desirable local estates wink so yes, we get a lot of people ignoring the 30 limit. The worst offenders are taxi drivers, closely followed by local residents.

Entertainingly the council sent round a proposal for a blanket 20 limit for the local roads. They (well, the police) don't enforce the 30 limit now so why they think a 20 limit that they have explicitly said they won't be enforcing will make any difference I don't know.rolleyes

Kind of agree but dont want to tar all owners with that brush, there may be the fact that being a bigger car it is more noticeable and seems to be moving faster, even taking that into account it does seem to be moving pretty fast and it seemes to be every hour or so, in and out so its not like its twice a day.

Living opposite a school has its benefits.
Most drivers are fairly sensible and there are only the occasional late night idiots who can be heard trying to get a piston or two out the top-end of their Saxos.

Yep, U-shaped road, one particular bell-end (claims every handout he can, has a disabled don't park here line outside his house, generally a knob, and will complain to the council or police about anything he can) regularly goes past at 35+ at a guess, in his suzuki wagon r thing.

The road has cars lining both kerbs and there are lots of families with young kids around. The irony is, he's usually driving it to the shops which are ~500 yards away, and his only real disability is a consequence of too many pies.

I must add, I have "previous" for this, not speeding but getting annoyed, previous house was on a long straight road, long story short the sheltered accomodation one end went and was replaced by some new houses and there was all manner of nice cars, Escort Cosworth, BMW 3 series Coupe (328i I think), Esprit V8. Was getting the baby out of the car on the wrong side it had to be said and the 328i went past at high speed inches from my backside, saw him do it a few more times, mental speed and went and asked him to slow down, was an Irish guy and he took offence despite my approach which wasnt aggressive in the slightest, he actual offered to fight me but his wife said I better go and that he was a bit drunk.

He then made a point of speeding past and flicking me the bird whenever he saw me, I didnt go back round but had a word with the local traffic unit (was working at the Police at the time) and had a word and they agreed that he needed looking at, first time they set the gun he went past, 67 in a 30 I was told, didnt hear the outcome for him but never saw him go past again. What would you get for that kind of speed, was about 96/97.

We have one or 2 on ours, one Insignia that drives fairly quick and a bint in an E46 328 convertible, but that just is loud which doesn't help her case.

Only other car worthy of a mention is a PH'er just round the corner with a Champagne kind of colour Tuscan S, he doesn't drive past quick but it's so loud when it comes past it's just epic, and it pops and cracks immensely! Love it!

Yes. I live on a residential, one way, single lane street with parking bays either side. Runs parallel to a main road and cuts out two sets of lights. The council have put up a green twenty limit, but as you say, the knobs just tear down it above 30. I have thought about asking the council to put in an enforcable 20 limit, but that could lead to speed bumps, which nobody wants.

How I laughed the day that a 40 footer decided to squeeze down the road and stop near the bottom to make a delivery for 20 minutes. Cue a queue of impatient tts gridlocked behind him hehe

Yes. 30mph limit, but a wide, and relatively straight main road. Lots of bad visibility driveways. We live on the one big bend, and on at least 4 occasions in the last 3 yrs I've had to call 999 for a driver who's discovered the limits of their ability. Last one was a police van on a call-out at 2am. The little tree directly across from my driveway is a lot sturdier than it looks.

Especially bad on Friday and Saturday nights, when the taxi drivers seem to think bus lane = dual carriageway, and race each other into town. Muppets. Can't wait to move off this road.

I did kind of mention it passing to the SUV driver when chatting about the Dog and his propensity to shoot out given half a chance, and how given the speeds some people drive down the road he wouldnt stand a chance, in one ear out the other, subtle hint was too subtle.

I keep a old Mclaren pram in the porch, with a doll in it.

The look on their faces when it's launched it in front of them is priceless, especially the ones that hit it only for me to remove it with a big smile.

Residents don't speed here anymore.

We live in a street thats called a "way" links off another road in the estate but loops all the way around to meet the road again.

The bloke across the road used to speed off after arguing with his wife, wheel spinning off up the road, proper knob.He doesn't do it anymore after a near miss.He also had the audacity to tell his kids to watch the road for cars, the irony.

A house around the corner has a visitor come in an identical car to mine, even down to the registration year which is unfortunate. He drives way too fast, even with kids about and I get paranoid people will think it's me.
Not unfounded because a few people who live further round tend to give me dirty looks,it's either that or they just don't like me for some reason laugh

This.

I use the speed limit function on my BM to make sure I stick to 30 through villages. I have had complete idiots overtake me at speed offended by me sticking to the limit.

They'd need an extremely powerful 4x4 and even then they'd probably crash.

Worst we get is a mildly noisy bus about 100 yards away.

I live in a quiet little village on a 20mph road - no speed bumps - between a primary and a docs surgery, so lots of kids and oaps around. The people who fly around here aren't boy racers...usually mums in SUV's who would be the first to shout and scream if their buddle of joy was hit by a car. Always the bloody mums !

Yes. Often people who held me up at well under the speed limit on the NSL road into the village. Pricks.
