........ my 7 years as a member of PH, and over 3500 posts that I have never posted a What Car thread. I have certainly read enough of them, and even contributed to a few, but now is my turn to ask what I have not thought of. I am going to be quite specific, so I hope that it won't be too difficult to fill the gaps.
Currently we have a 123D, which we are looking to replace with a 2 seat convertible - S2000 (my choice), MX5, Z4, SLK, Boxster, or Spyder (wifes choice). That is not for this thread though. Before we sell the 123D, we need to get another main car, to allow this toy to be purchased.
I previously had a CLS320 CDI, and performance (220BHP), 0-60 in 7.0 seconds, and economy (I saw average 34mpg) was perfect. I am looking for something similar in new car. Only thing the CLS could not do, was tow, and next car needs to be able to tow. It needs to be big enough to take 2 sets of golf clubs, and a Stewart golf trolley - without having to put seats down.
Budget is £15,000 preferred, up to £20,000 for the right car. Miles p.a. are approx 15,000 so prepared to consider a petrol, if it makes sense, and the maths work out. Car will only be for a couple of years, so want something that has taken the largest depreciation hit, and to aim to lose only 25% of value over next 2 years.
These are the must haves, and have nots (and there are some strange ones here!):-
Previously considered and ruled out - X3 - too ugly, Tiguan - too slow, Qashqai - too slow, Murano - too thirsty (if anyone has evidence I am wrong - would reconsider), Q5 - too expensive, Grand Cherokee - too much woood!
Current short list:-

- Ability to tow
- 4x4 preferred - if not RWD. Need to get across fields with bikes being towed, + handy for the 5 days snow every year!
- Automatic
- Heated front seats
- Memory seats preferred
- PDC
- Bluetooth
- Sat Nav preferred but not necessary
- Leather interior
- No wood trim!
- 56 plate at oldest
- 50,000 miles max - preferably below 40,000 miles.
- Sports version - M-Sport over SE, S-line over SE, Altitude over SE etc etc..
Previously considered and ruled out - X3 - too ugly, Tiguan - too slow, Qashqai - too slow, Murano - too thirsty (if anyone has evidence I am wrong - would reconsider), Q5 - too expensive, Grand Cherokee - too much woood!
Current short list:-
- BMW X5 - 2006 cars onwards
- Audi A4 Avant Quattro - 2007 cars onwards
- Audi A6 Avant Quattro - 2007 cars onwards
- VM Touareg Altitude - 2007 cars onwards

I would add something from subaru to your list - legacy, outback, forester to mane but 3
I did have these on the list at one point. Lack of diesel put me off previously - but have only recently considered petrol again, so could be back on the list. Need to do some homework on these - know they are boxer engines, but not sure what that means, generally do not know a lot about them.Fats25 said:
I thought performance/economy/age and therefore cost would not meet the criteria. Any examples?
Millage is proving a problem but theres alot under 80k http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3739363.htm
its even got a tow bar, if not a RR a disco 3

Honestly, a rr / disco will leave a Q5, x5, etc etc standing off road, in comfort stakes and RR is a clasical peice of kit, theres no where they dont fit in.

The diesel Range Rover looks very slow!http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3739363.htm

The Petrol Range Rover - performance is good enough - but I would imagine a 4.4 petrol will be a bit too thirsty. Looks like 18mpg from what I can see on first google. I probably need a bit more MPG than that!
Disco is probably a bit big for what I need - again looks too slow from what I can see.

What about a Skoda Yeti? They've had some very good reviews.

I did consider - but wife has ruled out as being too ugly/strange - I think she is being a snob personally, but I am not going to win this one.E

A great suggestion, and one I had not considered. Boot is perfect, and performance is great. Our neighbours have the diesel. Unfortunately as above - wife has vetoed.2007 onwards Volvo XC70 D5 SE Sport - with the 205PS twin turbo diesel if you must go dag-dag.
But the straight six petrols are fantastic in their own right, very smooth and surprisingly efficient, especially the 306PS T6.
With your list of requirements in front of me, that would get the nod. Or budget permitting, an XC60 R-Design.

I like the XC60.... not so keen on the XC70. Think as you suggest the XC60 is above budget. But the straight six petrols are fantastic in their own right, very smooth and surprisingly efficient, especially the 306PS T6.

Perhaps not to your performance needs but have you considered a Disco?

ETA: Actually, this doesn't really fit the criteria at all unless you spend the full £20k, such as:

There are a few '07 Discoveries that meet your brief on Autotrader. I would rather have an X5 or a proper Range Rover though even if it meant relaxing the mileage criteria to stay within budget.
Not saying they can't do it, but I wouldn't fancy my chances getting across wet or muddy fields with an A4 or A6 towing a trailer. Very few of them seem to be fitted tyres suitable for the task and then there is the ground clearance issue. Fitting suitable M+S rated tyres would just look out of place on them whereas would fit right in on a SUV type machine.
Forgot to add that ML280 CDIs are also within budget and brief and you liked your last Merc.

I had almost exactly the same criteria as you and ended up with a 2007 XC70 D5 SE LUX with EVERYTHING - Nav, Adaptive Cruise, Adaptive suspension, Cornering Lights, Dynaudio +sub, BLIS, integrated child seats, rear seat DVD...
£17500 of options when new, which is more than I paid for the car. The boot is absolutely massive and easily swallowed 10 sets of wheels and tyres with the seats down. F.E is about 32mpg with everything switched on, 35mpg if you switch a few things off. I once saw 40, but its generally low 30's even round town.
The main thing that did it for me, was the reasonable servicing costs over the absolute p-takers at AUDI, otherwise I was looking at A6 allroads, although non were anywhere near as well specced as the Volvo.
