I've just bought a set of 14" wheels without tyres so I need some rubber. They are going to be "summer wheels" so I want something nice and grippy. Are these half slick tyres worth considering?

185-55-14 or 185-60-14?

Thanks for any suggestions/advice. smile

Never had a problem with Yokohama a539s or UNIROYAL RAINSPORT 2 are pretty damn good and available in a selection of 185/50+55+60 profiles with prices around £40-70 a corner

I've got 185/60/14 on my MX5. It requires V rated tyres and there's only two premium choices. Yoko Advans or the Michelin PE2s I've got - they're a good, if pricey, tyre.

H rated and there's loads of choice still available. Heard good things about the Dunlop SP Sport Fast Response - but had no personal experience.

Maybe a stupid question but why does it need V rated tyres when you most likely wont be going that speed? The fastest I go is 70mph so I'm not bothered about rating, even the lowest rating is higher than 70mph, right? boxedin

Dunlop SP Fast Response just got a great result in one of the German tests. Think that's what I'm going for next. Uniroyal Rainexperts worth a look too if an everyday, all year car.

This.

Both the manual and the sticker on the door specify V rated for my 01X MkII. I'm sure H would be absolutely fine for normal use but there is no concrete proof anywhere that you can downgrade the manufacturer's spec.

I believe H rated were the approved spec on the MkI.

I have the aforementioned Dunlop fast response on my 14 inch wheels on my Eunos. Grip is good, probably too good if you know what I mean. Done nearly 12k miles on them and they still have plenty of tread.

I had a lease company car and the lease company asked KwikFit to put lower speed rating tyres on it than were on it from new. I thought 'I'll soon stop that' and called our company insurer. They couldn't have cared less - 'you can't go over 70MPH anyway' they said.

This issue has come up a few times on here and there no-one (even the people who work for insurance companies) knows of a claim being refused. Winter tyres are almost always H rated - my car (Merc) has a setting in the cluster to limit the top speed when H rated winter tyres are fitted.

Thanks for the replys guys.
Its given me a lot to think about, the yokos sound a good bet, I have yokos on the 15s I have on at the moment and they are very good. I have also been looking at yoko A048R but I think they might be a bit extreme for road use and at £100 a corner a bit steep.

Also the Dunlop could be an option, I've never had Dunlops before. I have Toyos on my M3 which are nice but don't last very long. Would they last a bit longer on the Eunos as it is much lighter?
Thanks
