Speedo stopped working and tcs light on

Driving down to ayrshire for a car with another PHer in my 1998 Mondeo ST24 and the speedo has stopped working and the traction control light is now stuck on.

The speedo needle was fine and started to flicker, and now it is doing nothing at all.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I would have thought it would be the speed sensor, but would this cause the traction control light to remain on?

At a guess I'd say the speedo sensor was dead. Traction control can't work if it doesn't know the car is moving so I guess it's switched itself off until the problem is rectified.
