Real-time consumption figures
Discussion
There's nothing makes me puke as much as those official figures on consumption from the manufacturers.
For instance, my own Citroen C5 has a quoted figure of 41.5 mpg Urban: 64.20 Extra Urban: 53.3 Combined.
What an absolute load of b
ks. I have tried, I have REALLY tried. And all my efforts result in a combined figure of 33.4 over the last 6000 miles. I reset the clock occasionally when doing a long motorway drive so that I can do a decent speed and keep the cruise control in charge thus giving a better consumption figure. It seems to work for that occasion but gives only 41.6 at a steady 65. And then you hit town. It dives quite quickly to resume to 33.4 no matter how steady I drive.
So, can I make a request to the forum admin people. Can you please start a section where we, the driving population who rely on true statistics, can post our ACTUAL consumption figures. This can be a section where we post at say, every 5000 miles.
I'm currently considering the new DS5 hybrid which quotes 74.4 mpg but I JUST KNOW this will be an optimistic expectation. So where in hell do we get real-time results?
Without wishing to spend such a relatively large sum on buying a new car without some evidence of it's actual consumption figures I find myself torn between believing Citroen's blurb and my own experience from past ownership

I assume it's a turbo diesel. Citroen aren't alone - the best i ever got from my BMW diesels was about 20% below the combined figure (and thets in "extra-urban" driving, so probably just over half the extra-urban figure)
Get a nice normally aspirated petrol engine, i get 20% better mpg than the claimed figures, driving it just the same way.

Is that 6,000 miles from new? If from new, it's a fairly new car, so won't be run in yet, so i wouldn't expect you to achieve the combined figure. Using cruise control won't help either, i got 3-4 mpg less (brim to brim)when trialling my cruise control for a couple of tanks.
6000 miles from new.I wish.It's now at 93000.
The consumption never seems to have been much different from new though. Have even tried running for long periods without the air-conditioning on.
The tables from the links provided aren't very conclusive for me I'm afraid. The models shown don't include my own which is the 2.2 Exclusive Tourer, new shape C5. A table which would allow input from us directly would be more useful.
I will add that even though I'm not at all happy with the consumption I have no qualms about the quality of the car.
I've already sat in the new DS5, played with the controls etc and am absolutely in love with it. If the consumption figures are within 20% of those claimed then it'll be well worth the expense of a new one since 80% of 74.4 mpg is still round about 60 mpg which is almost double that currently showing on my C5.
Look at it this way, I do around 28000 miles a year. At current diesel prices of £1.47 a litre (£6.70 a gallon)and consumption of 34, this runs to a cost of over £5500 per annum. Halve that if the consumption is around the 60 mpg and that's a hell of a saving over 4 years normal trade in periods for me. In fact, it really offsets any griped about poor residual values and hey....given the fact that it is a fuel efficient large car should attract a pretty good residual anyway.
You might also consider that if it costs £27000 new (mid range hybrid) it's pretty much saving around £230 a month in fuel costs so a bit larger monthly purchase amount for the new car doesn't sit too badly when compared to less expensive cars of other makes.
