Only seen them in the US. I think they are sold to misguided people under the guise they protect the paint (stone chips and bugs... some of the insects in the US are huge!!).

LOADS of VW vans have them (mostly T4 and T5).
I'd rather put spinners on my wheels.
I got a bit of a nasty stone chip on our new California (T5 based). Touched up no problem and way better than some ridiculous looking comedy accessory. Mind you a lot of VW vans also have 20++ inch alloys too. Useful on a utility vehicle...

I got one with my car when I bought it, never used it, though it was evident the previous owner had as there was a tide mark on the vinyl stripes, took a while to polish it out. There is also one for the front bumper.
As others have said they are designed to protect the car’s front end from stones etc but if badly fitted they do more harm than good.
They seem to have been adopted as part of some sort of 'scene' (not sure which one) for their status or looks (seriously

Yes, it's a scene thing. The ones they have are useless anyway, you need one that goes the full width of the nose for it to protect everything:) rather than just their function alone.
They're used a lot in the USA, because they still have quite a lot of unmade roads - I used to drive down one most days when I was commuting out there.
Been around on "the scene" for longer than I care to remember.
