Just got one of these.
I thought the idea of a credit card style licence was so you could carry it as a proof of ID/legality etc?

The paper counterpart suggests that both parts should be kept 'together in a safe place'.

So whats the point of that then???

It's scarcely a new complaint. Yes it's stupid, however I challenge you to name one non-stupid thing that government has done in the last 20 years.

Not "New style" at all, they have been out for ages.
Maybe that's why the last poster said "90s"

Just a thought as I ponder this life we lead.

"Until July 1998, driving licences outside Northern Ireland did not have photographs. Anyone who holds a licence issued before this date may retain their photo-less licence until expiry (normally one's seventieth birthday) or until they change address, whichever comes sooner. The new "photocard" driving licences are a two-part document, a plastic photocard which has to be renewed every ten years, for a fee, and a paper sheet (the "Counterpart Driving Licence") which is valid until the holder's seventieth birthday. The Counterpart details the individual's driving entitlements and convictions ("endorsements"). Endorsement codes stay on the licence for 4 or 11 years depending on the offence."

So have you been driving around illegally because the latest your old style licence expired was 2008?

Paper part is going to be phased out in a few years.

Photo card can be used as Id but both parts will be needed for motoring reasons, points, speed awareness, etc

Guess op has just moved or had 70th birthday
10 year rule applies to photo card, ( well the photo on it) not older paper only licences

I've still got the original old style license. Does the job and don't need to pay the government every change years to update the photo.

Only downnside is all my speeding offences are listed from 1983 :-(

My bad.

Anyways. I remember having this conversation before forums existed.
I think it was called "talking" or something. Meh.

Move along.

I thought speed awareness was just that not a penalty? Are you supposed to send your license away to say you've been on a course?

Why do we have photocard licenses? The clue is in the little blue flag with twelve yellow stars that's on each of them.

Send it away- no, but you need to take both parts with you on the day of the course.

I've not had to send my licence away to get the ppoints addes, they just do it at the court when I pay the fine.

By the way did they charge you £20 for the update of the license in addition to the fine?

You don't need a photo licence for a SAC, my wife has been on two and she still has the old style paper licence along with points added a couple of years ago so not even any need to change for them to be added.
