I bought my wife a secondhand car a couple of weeks ago. The car came from a main dealer but the car is of another make.

After driving home I noticed the drivers side front tyre was close to the legal limit (or right on the limit), even though the car had been serviced the day before, MOT'd and one other new tyre had been fitted. It was silly of me to miss this when we collected the car but hey ho.

Three days later the gearbox starts to play up. I could get reverse without using the reverse lock out on the lever, 1st seemed to have moved to the right and I could not get 5th (as the lever was hitting the surround on the dash.

The selling garage kindly agree for a local garage to look at it (as the selling garage is over 100 miles from my house). The local garage suggests a £40 part (the cheapest item that could be at fault in the gear linkage) may help. The local garage would themselves also have done the second part (circa £90) as well but the selling garage want to go with the cheaper option first. They agree to also putting a new tyre on as a gesture of goodwill.

For three days all seems fine, then the same issue with the gearbox re-appears. The car has been back to the local garage today for the £90 part. I was going to get the RAC to deliver the car to the selling garage but they agreed to me continuing repairs with "local" garage.

At 5pm tonight I am told the second part has not helped and the issue can only be inside the gearbox.

I do feel the selling garage have been very helpful so far. So I am going to get the car to them tomorrow and hope they will agree to lending us a car to use. It is a 200 mile round trip after all.

What are the general feelings here? I am of course going to give them a chance to sort this issue. They have been fair to me but they have sold us a car with a fault and I have spent quite alot of time so far trying to sort the problem.

Would you demand a refund now?

What would you do?

Did you get the car for a damn good price? Hence the 200 mile trip.
How long is the warranty you have on it going to last for?

Sounds to me like they are being very reasonable, the car wasn't damaged when you bought it and they really didn't need to change the tyre. I would give them a chance to have the issue resolved.

To be fair they do seem to be helping/supporting.

It isn't their fault you are at a distance and so far appear to be playing ball. If you can't reach agreement on the intended solution now it's been identified as internal, then that might be another issue.

You never know might be positive and get a new gearbox - I would wait and see what they suggest first.
