Morning all,

So I bought a second hand car from a dealer in October last year, it came with a years warranty which was a major selling point for me.

It's had a couple of little issues fixed already by them;
New radio
New backbox
New brakes on the back to make the handbrake work
ABS not working or activating under normal braking conditions which turned out to be a loose driveshaft

but one overwhelming issue is it's habit for oil, this started a month in when the "Oil low, fill oil" warning appeared, it's currently going through a litre and a half/week with an average weekly mileage of less than a thousand miles.

After three months of going in weekly for the oil to be topped up they finally got an engineer from the warranty company to look at it and replaced all the breathers, this was two months ago and no further corrective action has been agreed/suggested/planned.

This has had no effect, and it's still drinking oil

The car doesn't smoke, there is very little residue inside the turbo hose and no leaks.

So two questions:

1 - What are my rights, can I demand a new engine or a timeframe for this to be fixed
2 - I'm also concerned that they will just drag it out until the warranty runs out and then tell me to pay for it, can they do that?

I'm getting annoyed now, the dealer is helpful and say they are just waiting on the warranty company who are dragging their heels but it's getting daft now having to drive to a different town once a week to get some oil (and no I'm not paying £15/week for my own oil, and they have specifically asked me not to top it up so they can keep accurate records)

I'm also concerned that the engine is now starting to sound a bit tappety for the first few minutes of running.

Oh and to add insult to injury they didn't fit the turbo hose on correctly and when I went back they just said they had only taken the turbo hose off so it must be something else and they were fully booked so it would have to go in next week to be looked at for its poor performance and rough running/idle! Having been given the "only had the turbo pipe off" clue, I stopped round the corner and found that the pipe had been pinched by the clip and had a hole i could stick my finger down:

What would you do?

Judging by how much oils leaking out of that hole I'd say your turbo seals have gone.

What car is it?

They have said that the oil residue in the pipe isn't excessive, and having seen the amount of residue in other turbo'd cars I've owned I'd agree, but as you said there does seem to be alot of residue around where the hole in the pipe is.

As for having the oil analysed, by who and to check for what? metal fragments? incorrect grade?

I'd agree with Leptons, turbo seals gone, oil is getting into the inlet.

Book it in, ask for a courtesy car, and say you will collect when they have sorted it. Make it their problem, it will get sorted much sooner.

And make sure you ask for a list of all items fitted to the car to fix it, so you can see if the are trying to dodge the problem.

Leave it idling for an extended period, if its turbo seals it will probably start chuffing out enough smoke that you expect Midge Ure to appear out of it.

I had a Fiat Coupe that had a knackered turbo and it did the same stuff, drank oil and slathered it all over the engine intakes, didnt smoke, the dealer needs to replace the turbo, it isnt a massive job but it depends what the rest if like, take the oil filler off whilst its running and if you get pulses of oily gas with some force behind them then you have "blow by" and the engine needs piston rings, an oily haze is normal but if it pulses its borked, which realistically, these days is a replacement unit, I cant imagine that there s a shortage of these as the engines last longer than the cars as a rule and being a petrol they aren't expensive.

Well, it has to be going somewhere. If it is not actually leaking out then it has to be burning it.

The RMS (Rear Main Seal) sometimes goes on these so check for any oil leaking out of the bell housing and also leaks from the intercooler.

As others have said, the most likely thing is that the turbo seals are weak or gone.

We had the same car a few years back that used oil, although it had done 120K miles....We took the car back off the customer, put him in something else and got rid via the auctions.....dissapointing thing was the car was 4 years old at the time

Just to add as regards to rights. Firstly it depends on the terms of the warranty - beyond that any further rights outside the 3rd party warranty depend a lot on how many miles it has done and how old it is.

6 months after purchase, particularly if it has done a few miles, you haven't a lot if any direct comeback with the dealer.

even if it's been an issue since a month after buying it?

Also noticed in the smallprint that the "year" is also limited to 20,000miles frown

How old is it, how much did you pay, how many miles had it done when you bought it and how many have you done since? - These are all things which are going to be a factor really.

20k mileage limit for 1 year isn't unreasonable, but it sounds like you are doing mega miles and perhaps should have checked the warranty terms a bit more carefully?

I will say though, if the problem has been there since buying the car, it is not unreasonable to expect a fix, whether you will get one or not is a different question.............. sounds to me like the garage is being helpful at the moment, but if the warranty co. say no then I bet they wont want to know either.

Oh, i'm still within the 20k, but given how long it has taken so far I'm concerned i won't be when they finally do something about it.

it's a 55 plate, 80k on when i bought it for £5500, which i felt was a bit more than going rate, but with the warranty offered and the service history and condition of the car (it was perfect) I felt this to be a good deal!

If the warranty co say no then they have failed to keep their side of the contract surely??

Then as was suggested, take it in, ask for a courtesy car, and don't accept the car back until it's fixed.

Went in again, they are speaking to warranty company, 3 days later warning on again, called them today and said I wasn't happy and that I was going to drop it off with them and take a courtesy car until it was fixed.

They said they had been talking to the warranty company and were going to chase them again.

Seems to be getting worse now, 2L in since Thursday! (Approx 1500 miles)

I'll update you after the next visit, although if I don't get my way it might be on the news "Angry customer crashes into showroom"
