Super cheesy Manta video.

You're probably right. This idea started as I've been debating whether or not to start building an Ultima GTR. And in doing so started to look at engine choice. Naturally, being a petrol head, I immediately looked for the most powerful. This was a bad idea, as I'm now obsessed with the thing, and it's just a case of finding something to put it in.
The frustrations and humiliations endured by that Merc driver led to drastic measures to fund his uberkompressorprojeket:

That was terrible!!! Nice mantas other than the multi coloured thing - nice clothes on the Merc yuppie.
I know of someone that shoe horns LSs into anything and a standard one would be good in a manta as rover v8s have been used in the past - might need some better brakes, they weren't that good with 115bhp.

Yep, I had a GTE and the brakes were rubbish, went from a MK1 Golf GTI to a Manta and the Golf would run rings round it, I kind of preferred the 1.8 version as it had the more modern engine, the 2.0 Injection was an old Van engine from the 1800's, never understood why they didn't bung the 130 Cavalier SRi engine in it ?
Love the shape though and with work they can be really good, I reckon a cheap way to a fast Manta would be to see if a Volvo T5 unit will go in, easy 300 bhp attainable, cheap, plentiful and makes a nice noise.

The earlier twin piston calipers were an easy upgrade...as were the Volvo ones the Owners Club gave a 'how-to' on. I ditched the single-pot sliders when I went to 2.4 ( 165-ish bhp ).Love the shape though and with work they can be really good, I reckon a cheap way to a fast Manta would be to see if a Volvo T5 unit will go in, easy 300 bhp attainable, cheap, plentiful and makes a nice noise.
I reckon the 156bhp Astra GTE 16 valve engine was the one I'd have liked in my old Manta

They could have done that for the 'exclusive' but not the earlier models as that engine didn't really come out until '88.Love the shape though and with work they can be really good, I reckon a cheap way to a fast Manta would be to see if a Volvo T5 unit will go in, easy 300 bhp attainable, cheap, plentiful and makes a nice noise.
I'm almost as mad on Vauxhalls as I am early Fords. I'd love a white ascona or manta to do a 200/400 rep as I would a mint Mexico or mk1 RS2000.
Almost bought an F plate exclusive in blue a few years ago but thought better of it. It was only about a grand too.
Manta Manta is absolutely awesome and a proper cult-movie nowadays in Germany.
It's very much over the top, yes, but that's the fun part of it. The Ruhrpot (like the Midlands, an economy based on industry & coal mining) as a setting is well chosen too.
It pokes fun of the stereotypical working class people there, but not too badly. Mostly with a wink.
Fav line from the movie:
Main lead talks to a leftie 2CV driving female journo:
"Why the hell am I talking to you in the first place, your POS car costs less than my car stereo"
And BTW:
And the main lead is now quite well known in the UK as:
