It is reported in the Sunday Times today that owners of personalised plates will be allowed to move letters and numbers closer together to more easily spell words under a relaxation of the rules to be announced this summer

Gratuitous piccy follows to illustrate what will be allowed

Why can't we ditch front number plates?
Bikes don't have them.

Surely the answer would be to have rear facing cameras. Wouldn't take too much work, just turn them round and set them to record vehicles going away from them.

Can I claim a refund for my fine?

Pulled over because the ANPR couldn’t read the number.

Correct spacing on the letters and correct font. The illegal bits were.

Stick on front on curved surface of TVR Griffith front panel.

Silver letters on black background when age of car requires yellow background.

No border on plate making it difficult for the computer to lock onto a black plate when attached on a black car.

I think it may have been the GB stickers that really confused the system. I had ordered a spare stick-on number plate with the registration GB GB GB in silver letters on black background. I cut this into three separate GB’s and stuck them rather near the number plate. I think the ANPR didn’t know where the registration ended and the GB started.

If you get caught they require you to send photographs of the car with proper plates refitted. They don’t tell you this in the original letter, but they accept email photos to save messing around.

They also threaten to withdraw your registration number if caught again and give any old number from the same year. If you have a private plate then this is an issue, but if it’s saving on points and the average speed tax then….

Not recommended though, I had a myriad of people flashing me when I lost the front plate off my Picanto (someone nicked it!)

I was unaware of this because I hadn't checked it was still there when I drove off (who does?)

By co-incidence reading the IVA manual at present and can't find reference to front registration plate placement.

Is this the result of me keeping to my wintertime drinking pattern or because they aren't required on the front?

IIRC somewhere it states "the plate must be visible from the front of the car" or words to that effect

I think the Sunday Times printed the story a week early.

Just so people could only have one number plate?

'Surely the answer' would be to do nothing.

On topic - I don't see the problem, as long as the letters aren't ridiculously spaced, ie almost touching, leaning, a silly font, or with strategically placed bolts, etc.

Seems like a sensible decision, I never had a problem with mis-spaced plates as long as they're legible.

I wish they'd allow pre-73 plates on any age car too - modern cars are slathered with reflectors anyway and the black plates often look better.

Clever move that will now help them sell more of the harder to shift plates that require dodgy spacing........

I wish they would allow you to buy old plates that have been issued in the past but not been on a car for years.
I want the plate my dad had years ago, the car it was on has since been scrapped and off the road for years
