I have come to the conclusion that whatever my next car is, it needs to be a V8. I am a fan of engines that rumble, bark and bellow at the lower ends of the rev range - big lazy torque monsters. The thunder of a big-banger v8 with race pipes is something to be beheld.

A friend of mine is very much a "ricer" - it has to be a small capacity 4 or 5 cylinder that is wrung to its redline until it screams and shrieks. I think that an ear-splitting screamer is horrible personally but he is adamant.

What do you think? *lights blue touch paper and retires*

I like it when they scream, as I know they are enjoying it just as much as I am.

Depends on the car - I can appreciate both, but I'd probably favour a screamer.

Screamer. I'll take a nicely tuned Japanese car over a lazy, flatulent V8 any day.

I've had a car with a 9200 redline (with supercharger whine and straight through exhaust), I now want a V8 with a blower.

Screamers don't really do it for me. Much prefer a rumble and a burble.

The clatter of a two litre diesel cloud9

More seriously, I like both as long as they sound nice and not, as someone above put it, just noisy for the sake of it. Probably erring towards the side of rumble though smokin

Whistle & whine?

The MG1600 - having twin Webers - sounds like an old skool Lotus Cortina or Twin Cam Escort cloud9 - just wind the window down and chill cool .

Oh, go on then - rumble, if I must choose smile . Might as well, the fuel economy can't get much worse!

Screamer for me, but I like a lumpy idle and bit of mid-range growl as well. hehe

I previously had an S2k with the previously mentioned 9200rpm limiter. It sounded just fantastic at the top-end.

Now I have a TVR Chim. It's like driving an explosion (trad. arr. Clarkson). Apocalyptically loud, it changes character depending on revs. Low down it sounds a tad American (as it would, being a Buick engine design). Near the limiter it sounds like it's revving its tits off in a pedestrian-levelling bellow, despite only being at a heady 6000-ish rpm.

Both. I like both.

The only 4-pot that does it for me is the BDA, it sounds almost operatic.

Can only get over 9k with an aftermarket ECU, and there isn't much power gain up that end of the revs.
