Hi guys,

Found an Alfa 156 going near me that seems like a bit of a bargain, but needs some work doing, possibly gearbox/clutch issues (the seller isn't very mechanically minded, so isn't sure of the issue).

How hard would this be to do myself? As it seems like a lot of car for the money!

A good one won't cost a fortune.

Having just helped a mate change the clutch on his 156 I'd run a mile.

You can get a very niceone for a bag of sand.

The general scruffiness in places (eg engine, dents) dont leave a good impression- the gearbox will be the tip of an expensive iceberg. That £1500 will be a rolling maintenance obligation, not one off trouble shooting.

Reminds me of an advice given to me by a Property developer who started out with 1500 quid in 1985, now he is good for about 120 million...

"If you have to start doing the numbers on it, its too expensive"

Applied to property but still...
