just so you know the car is a 2002 subaru impreza jdm sti up for £4,300
(this is not a for sale add as deposit is taking)

Right this may just be me worrying over nothing, i have got my car up for sale, an somebody in france contacted me an said they would have it at the asking price, he said he would paypal me £500 deposit an the remaining £3,800 in cash on collection of car.

I looked in my paypal account going in by my own page an not via his email, ( as there are scams out there like this) an the money is there, so all good,

But the thing the im not sure about is he is asking me to send him a copy of the v5, ive heard this is an insurance scam, that he use's this to claim an say car was stolen,

anyone heard off anything like this.

I'm sorry but in my opinion the moment someone mentions the word Paypal I'd be running a mile.

You obviously know sending a copy of the V5 is a bad idea and I personally wouldn't dream of sending someone a copy of it.

You've also got to ask yourself why would someone from France want a RHD Subaru worth just over £4,000? I'm sure there are plenty of them over there.

no im not going to be sending copy of v5 to him, but this is why im asking, to see if anyone has heard of this,

as for paypal the most scams you hear is when they send you a fake email from paypal an ask you to log in via a link in the email,

he sent a deposit via paypal as a deposit,

ive looked into it an for some reson it looks like the car is worth alot more over, i was thinking he was a trader trying to make some money, that i dont mind.

Another Paypal scam is where the scammer reverses the funds.

All he has to do, is tell Paypal there's a dispute with the sale and Paypal will reverse the transaction in his favour.

In your example I can see the scammer sending you £500, you send a copy of your V5 and then the scammer tells Paypal you won't give him the car for the agreed £500 or that he's found a problem with it (ie it's a Cat C) and you won't return his deposit.

Paypal will return his money and then you'll have giving him a copy of your V5 to do what he likes with for nothing.

Your car might be worth more in France but is that even when it's RHD and the buyer has paid all the import and registration costs?

Just to post a positive message on this thread. I'm from Belgium and have bought cars from the UK in the past.

I can't speak for France, but here I can get insurance to drive a car I've bought in the UK back to Belgium, but I would need a copy of the V5 to do so. In this case, the insurance certificate would refer to the chassis number rather than the number plate, and my insurance company requires a copy of the V5 before they will issue a certificate.

I would then travel with the number plates from one of my Belgian cars and affix them over/in place of the UK number plates.
I should also add that for this to be fully legal the car should be road legal in the UK (i.e. valid MOT and roadworthy - my number plates would cover road tax and insurance).

ETA: UK cars are quite attractive at present because second hand cars are relatively cheap in the UK. Can't comment on Paypal (don't use it). The picture of the Nigerian is getting a bit boring.

He can't really do anything with a scanned copy of the V5. Just make sure it's 'watermarked' before emailing if you're feeling particularly paranoid.

I'd take the £500 PayPal deposit to hold it - but explain that you'll refund this and want the whole amount in cash when he comes to collect.

It's not all that unusual that he wants a car from the UK, as JDM Imprezas are sought after cars (usually higher spec. with more power than official EU models) - which negates the RHD issue - you can't get LHD JDM spec. cars!

Just a disclaimer to say what I've said is only my opnion and shouldn't be taking as gospel.

Cars do get bought from other countries all the time with neither seller or buyer having any problems. It's nice to know that with all the scams that are currently going on that someone's posted that they personally do, do it all the time.

I said that you have to ask yourself why would someone from France want your car? If it was only available in the UK then that's a basis for why someone would make the effort.
