If you don't know what one is then you haven't!

I had a Morris Minor Estate with a crank handle. There was certainly a knack to it.
Catch it wrong and it'd hurt like fk!

Anyone else used to or have one now?

Yep, first car, Lada Niva 1200.

According to the handbook, designed to be able to start at -50c, part of the starting procedure at that temperature was to turn the engine over using the crank handle, through a hole in the front bumper.

My first car, a Morris 1000. Then shortly afterwards there was the hand-painted Austin Cambridge. If I'm not mistaken my two Hillman Minx may have had the hole in the bumper facility too.

I used the starting handle on several occasions on the Morris and Austin.

Not me but my brothers dad had an ex GPO Morris Van, I saw him start it by the handle once, it looked deadly if you got it wrong

No, although I have had a kick-start bike which is a similar (if less vicious) principle.

I regularly wish that the Lotus had a cranking handle when the alarm flattens the battery again; although in the case of the Lotus, it would have to come out through one of the rear wheels. hehe

I've had two. My first car a Dacia Duster. Utter, utter rubbish. And a SIII Diesel Land Rover. I've got the handle, but wouldn't know how to use it on a diesel.

You're all all welcome to try it though. Just let me set up a video camera for any YBF moments, first though.

First car was a 1927 Austin 7 which did not come fitted with a starter. Only a handle to wind it up or roll it down a hill,(always remember to park on a hill, lesson one! The starter you had to buy as an extra accessory, take off a metal plate over the flywheel and bolt the unit on (bolts supplied!) Handle works every time if you have a magneto fitted,no messing about with batteries .what progress!.
Next car was Austin 12/4 on which the starter was Kaput, not a problem , just used Austin 7 tecneque. Just dont ever try it with a Fordson tractor !!

I had on on the 2CV, sadly the electrics were too reliable for me ever to get to use it.

Also it looked like I could break an arm getting it wrong. Cowardice really.

All electronic car security systems work on the same principle - they drain the battery so it can't be driven away. The alarm and flashing lights are just marketing so people buy them.

Yes, I had an Austin A30 van during the severe winter of 1962/3. Woudn't start in the morning on the battery but just half a turn on the starting handle she was away. I think the first car without a crank handle was the Ford Anglia 105E.

Nope,

I'm trying to think if my folks had one. Would a V8 Landy have had one?

Citroen Dyane (posh version of a 2CVsmile), Several old land rovers, and an old Lada bought as an emergency stopgap years ago. And when the project is on the road, that'll have one as well. Only ever used the landrover one to wind it into the garage when the starter jammed. The Dyane kicked badly enough!

I had a SIII Land Rover Diesel but I was never brave/foolish enough to try.

Many years back I was talking to a pensioner down the club about my new motorbike and he joked about it being electric start, not like proper bikes from when he was a lad.

When I told him it was a 600cc single without a battery so it was kick start and only magneto ignition his comment was...

God bless you son

Yep, my Morris Traveller, I often use the handle just for fun.

Handy for adjusting the points too.
