Fly drive holiday
Discussion
Hi there
I did a Virgin atlantic fly-drive package around San Fran, Tahoe, Vegas and LA. I would recommend this type of holiday, as 2 weeks in LA would have driven me mad.
As it was winter with snow in the mountains, we went for a 4x4 Jeep Liberty.
This was with Dollar rental.
But many of the airport hire companies are much of a muchness. Crysler seebrings are their default "compact" car, and should be avoided at all costs.
On one trip to San Fran, I requested a dodge charger or similar, and got a Crysler 300. It was pretty plastic inside, and quite spongy to drive. Also, on Hawaii I'd requested a Mustang, but with the V6 engine it wasn't particularly fast, but at least had european style suspension, and the convertable helped with the heat.
All in all, if you want anything vaguely exotic, I'd try and seek out a specialist company. But this will obviously put the price up, as you won't get the package rates on hotel and car hire.
But even in the slowish Jeep, I found US driving very laid back and enjoyable (excluding LA), with the scenery providing the entertainment rather than the car. The US state troopers are quite big on speed enforcement too.
