Hi Everyone,

I started a new job a few months back and have since sold our trusty mk1 Focus to make way for a company car. I do have the option of taking an allowance but the car must be less than 3 years old so I dont think it's financially worthwhile as I'd have to buy new.

I was 99% home and dry with a Merc C220 CDI in SE trim. Lease price checked out ok at around £350exVAT per month (20,000 pa, 3 years, including maintenance). I had chosen a colour and got a delivery date from our fleet manager, then a few days later I heard that there was a problem getting finance setup with MB - we have a fleet of probably around 50-60 cars but none directly from Mercedes, if we use the regular providers such as Arval it adds £100 per month to the cost which is over budget. Safe to say I was gutted to say the least!

So that leaves me still in the loaner Golf Mk5 1.9TDI Match complete with police siren turbo and busted air con ;-)

So far it's not great pickings, as the C Class was such a good deal from MB Finance the other cars aren't anywhere near similar size/specification. So far I have been told of 2 that are within budget-

- BMW 1 Series (F20) 116d EfficientDynamics (Not released yet)
- VW Scirocco 2.0TDI Bluemotion Tech - haven' t had the spec level confirmed although I suspect the base model rather than the GT.

I cant find too much on the BMW yet as it's not officially out although a dealer said it's based on the SE spec so better than the 'seats and a steering wheel' ES spec. I worry that the 1.6 diesel could be completely gutless (Not expecting a performance car here but neither a complete slouch)

The Scirocco is concerning being a 3 door and the boot's not too great (We have a 10 month old)

Any advice on other things to look at or on the cars above would be great. Before I ordered anything I'd probably wait a few months and have another crack at the Merc if the offers are still running and see if anything has changed re: the finance as it would tick all the boxes lots of space, bit of grunt and high MPG.

Thanks,
Dan

How do the. Sums work out if you take your allowance and then lease a car yourself?

There are quite a few C220 20k miles for 3 or 4 years for around £350 ex VAT out there. They won't include maintenance (or insurance, if your work does that).

Here is a C220 auto for £368 per month including VAT

Don't think they'd go for it as we only have German cars, plus I'd have to wait for the 2013 Aston Martin Mondeo facelift as it's much nicer!

I'd have to insure it myself unfortunately which would make it quite expensive, good idea though!

I had an A3 sportback 1.6 diesel in sport trim a few years ago at a previous company and it was quite nice although I think I fancy a change this time, try something new. Thanks for the idea though!

I would (Don't have Skoda badge snobbery) but I don't think it would swing with the powers that be unfortunately as you do get a lot of car for the cash!
