SORN and Vehicle Insurance
Discussion
Request for help / guidance.
My car has been with supplying garage for 7 weeks and I've had to but second car as no idea when its gonna be back, garage been promising to repair but never deliver, its a whole other story and due to name and shame wont go into it here. Ive written and rejected the car and we continue to argue in writing.
Problem is that Ive been paying for road tax and insurance on anther car whilst this is sitting with garage and Ive had enough. Temp cover expires 7th and I don't want to renew. Now do I need to SORN. I thought I read somewhere that a vehicle had to be insured /taxed or SORN'd. Just looked on gov web site and lots of info on de taxing and refunds but nowt about insurance. As next date for tax refund end of April no rush but don't want to fall foul of any insurance issue as car still registered in my name.
Thanks in advance for help.

It was a new rule last year and you do need to have insurance if the car is taxed.
I did discover that you can SORN a car without sending the tax disc back and getting a refund, then un-SORNing by ringing DVLA and getting the disc re-instated. It worked for me anyway!
Andy did u use std SORN form and or refund form or go online?I did discover that you can SORN a car without sending the tax disc back and getting a refund, then un-SORNing by ringing DVLA and getting the disc re-instated. It worked for me anyway!
I used the online service to SORN the car, I can't remember the specific but I passed over the section where it said did I want to apply for a refund and of course never sent the disc back. To add to it, whilst the car was SORNed I transferred a personal plate from it and did receive a replacement tax disc with the new registration on it so it would appear that DVLA don't have too much problem with it, although I was told when un-SORNing that I should have surrendered the disc.
