clio 172 cup / clio 182?
Discussion
is there a clear winner as i am finding it hard to choose between the two, the cups seem to be cheaper but is this for a clear reason. as i have said i cant choose between the two, which is better on a road and on track? which is better on fuel? any other advice would be much appreciated

Having owned a 172 Cup I can say that these are one of the best hot hatches available now. I would have another in a heartbeat, and even considered selling my Clio Williams recently for another one. Had it not been for insurance (as it was going to be my second car, and the Willy is on a classic policy) I'd have one outside now.
You don't miss the ABS, or the leather seats or the Xenon lights. It has less toys, but for very good reason. It handles superbly and parts are relatively cheap. The blue looks superb (as does the rarer silver) especially with the multispoke Turinis. Try and find one which has had the cambelt and waterpump done as that is about £400 fitted so you can use that as a bargaining tool if it hasn't been done.
Personally, a 182 or FF 172 never made it on to my radar.

I had this choice to make... went for the 182FF. But it depends what you want to do with it? I drive to work, and the girlfriends, and not much else, leather interior and some toys suits me down to the ground. Although the 172 Cup does look great (on the outside) it's really just the wheels that do it, can be easily changed on the 182 if you want. Exhausts look great on the 182 as well, really wins it for me!
Well I went for the full fat 182 with cup chassis, which I think has the best of everything. The climate control, cruise, auto wipers, Zenons and things are all nice in a day to day road car and it's just as good when you're going maximum attack. The fuel economy is pretty much identical for all models as far as I know, mine averages 38-40ish mpg which I think is pretty good really.
Just my 2 cents.

I have a 172 cup which doubles as both my daily driver and my sprint racing car. What it lacks in toys, it makes up for in character and never fails to put a smile on my face.
I have never driven a FF 172 or 182, but if you are going to be doing any kind of track events or motorsport, then you will really come to appreciate the lower weight (100kg lighter than a FF) and simplicity of the 172 cup.

Or 24-28mpg if you're a pure town driver! Just my 2 cents.
but that's still far better than the 12mpg (average) I was getting from my Impreza... which hit lows of 9mpg when putting my foot down in case anyone was wondering!I've had 6 of the wee buggers. I wouldn't touch a 172cup, as I'm man enough to admit I prefer to have ABS on a road car in a world full of numpties. 182 and later 172's have slightly higher spec (TC/ESP and cruise/speed limiter). There's not a great deal of difference in how they drive, so I'd buy on colour/condition/mileage.
(FYI just bought a(nother) silver 172. All cars of that age need a bit of a refresh suspension wise imo, so for the money saved against a similar condition 182 I can replace the dampers etc)

I had a 182FF but had the cup chassis pack. I loved it and the better plastics and comfort of the FF made it into a really nice car. I miss mine and would love another just for the feel of a proper engine again, I'm a bit bored of the turbocharged engine in the current car even though it's far faster.
The only fault I found with the 182 was the poor driving position with funny offset pedal, it was more endearing than a real problem in the end but that was the only thing i'd change. Because of that, I'd go for a 182 Trophy. All the benefit of the 182 but better seats and seating position.

I can never remember ... did they actually go to the length of removing extra sound deadening from the 172 Cup or is that just a myth?
They did remove the sound deadening and also had thinner glass and lighter wheels along with poverty spec interior. This liberated around 80kg in weight savings.Had my 172 Cup for about 3 years, as above I use mine as a daily commuter & a Hillclimb car, hence I chose the Cup. They handle superbly, go well enough & IMO look great. The interior is cheap, the driving position not great & they are noisy/crude, none of that bothers me as I have a 996 too! Would I have a Cup as my only car? No chance! But then I probably wouldn't have a 182FF either to be honest. It all depends on what you want from a car, can honestly say I have never missed ABS/TC & very rarely miss AirCon.

I know one batch of the cups (think it was the earlier ones) had an aluminium bonnet. Pretty cool!Loved my old Cup.
