Do any of you have that 'one' car that you have dreamed about owning yet despite circumstances and funds allowing you just didn't end up buying?

I was just pondering this whilst walking the dog the other day (yes, my life really is this exciting....)

For me the car in question is the BMW M3. It is the one car I have coveted for years. I'll never forget the day I saw the boxed arches of an E30 on the road for the first time. During my teens and leading up to obtaining my licence I used to dream of owning an Estoril blue E36 coupe. Whilst romping round in my clio I used to salivate at the thought of upgrading to a E46 M.

Then, when the moons aligned.......I went out and bought........a 987 boxster. Don't regret the decision one bit, however a little part of me wonders what if.

Then the E9X M hit the scene. Screaming V8, best handling in class etc etc. Awesome, the perfect M car for me.

This time there are even more moons, in an even straighter line - So what do I do? I buy an AMG. No real rhyme nor reason just got distracted by the exhaust note and bloody seats of all things. The M dream remains unfulfilled.

Is it a case of subconsciously not wanting to meet my hero? Or simply that the M3 is not for me...... I cannot say.

Does this story sound familiar to any other PHers? And if so, please share (sorry if done before)

Cheers for reading

I think the res a couple, b ut they feature my dad, no me.

First was whe n dad was young and his father was buying a new car. Side by side in the showroom was a nearly new Morris Marina, and a 300 sl Gullwing. Despite my dads best efforts my grandfather bought the Marina instead frown

Second was a few years ago and dad was considering buying a S1 Elise (before they shot up to silly money for low mileage ones). Found a great one with v low mileage. Mthe only thing that put him off. Was that it needed new disks or pads I think anda he walked away from a great deal (around £6500 if I reall correctly).

I remember picking up a copy of Motorsport News and seeing a road going 6R4 in the classifieds for £18k. At the time I thought it was a bargain but it remained in the paper for what seemed like months. If I was in a position then to buy it I would have. I bet the person who owns that car now is cherishing it and the value is probably a lot more than my house...

I was "about to buy" something fun - probably a Boxster or Z3M - for about two years. Now I appear to be buying a wedding instead hehe

BMW E24 M635 CSi, came close to buying one twice previously (bought a Porsche 928 instead in the UK and in Germany I didnt realise they taxed big engine older cars off the road to force you to buy their characterless modern plastic ste to keep the Kraut consumerist machine turning), a dream car for me when I was doing my GCSEs, Finally bought one (Euro edition) 3 weeks ago cloud9.

What a peach of a car!

6R4.

My mum had one sat in our garage for quite a while & she had the opportunity to buy it for somewhere around £16k. My dad said no as he thought that it was 'just a Metro'.

He simply didn't get what the 6R4 was about. Still doesn't.

Me? So pissed off with him especially as he then went out & bought a Morris Marina 1.8TC!!

The 6R4 went back to Austin Rover on the back of a flat-bed.......

Yes, Capri 2.8i, drove one, went to get deposit and it had sold in the 15 mins I was gone, then a lad at work had one and he mentioned I always wanted one, he said he might be selling so I made a big deal of saying I would have it and to give me first refusal at the money he wanted, the pillock sold it whilst I was on leave for a week for £200 less than we had agreed.

I wish I hadn't have scrapped a Mk1 Scirocco Storm but what can you do? It was just an old car at the time.

Wish I still had all my old cars in a barn somewhere but life isn't like that.

Funny how a few of us bought Porsches instead.

For me - mint Honda NSX. Owned by a petrolhead mate who wanted rid for his next project. £11k 2 years ago frown

For no good reason I can remember I was 'worried' about buying and maintaining it. Spunked more than that on a 996 about 2 months later. Doh!

Old English White TR6 with all matching numbers and complete history from day 1 to current owner, just the second. Also had a spare engine and gearbox and several boxes of other "just in case" spares such as suspension arms, bearings, lights and assorted switches.

It was c25 years ago and I have regretted not taking out a crippling bank loan to buy it every time I see one on the road.

It was sold to an enthusiast who collected the car and all added extras in a covered trailer.

Nope none got away, I've fulfilled all my cars that's I've ever wanted and still have new ones added for future years. Life's too short to not drive the car you want.

There's 3 for me. All cars that I wanted but couldn't afford at the time. I daresay I could get any of them now, but they'd either be too old or megabucks due to restoration!

1) Lancia Beta Monte Carlo ( I have had a Beta HPE Volumex)
2) Jaguar XJS (Have had 4 XJ6's)
3) Range Rover, the original one. never liked the shape of the later ones.

Fess up to what?

I'm not saying I've owned Fezza's and Lambo's but all the cars that I class within reachable which to me is the likes of RS4's, M5's etc..... I think that some cars are even out of reach for Millionaires and are really dreamers cars but not one's that got away as such.

if the OP can afford an AMG and didn't get an M3 then I think they should definitely itch that scratch so to speak.

Nearly bought a DB6 about 10 years ago. Needed some work doing but all the cars I buy do. Couldn't afford one now.
