I thought I'd kick this one off with my experiences this week, which revolve around my 2 sons just finishing tours of Afghanistan wanting to buy cars. Both phone a week or so ago saying "hi Dad I'm going to buy a car and can you look something out for me so I can sort it out ASAP when I get back". Eldest says he has a budget of £6,000 for a diesel Focus (he wants something better but is in a new relationship and wants the money to get set up with his GF). Youngest has £7,000 and wants a Focus ST. So I spend bloody ages seeing what's out there, send them recommendations, test drove a mint 22,000 mile ST that I'd have given my right arm for if I was 24 and set up a deal on a diesel with the dealer who services my TVR. Job done.......or not.

Youngest gets home on Wednesday night with more lolly than he thought and he's decided to spend up to £15,000 an Audi S3. I tell him he's barking but he won't listen. As I work from home, work's slow and he's back we spent all Thursday morning looking at S3s on the internet. Emailed and phoned 5 private sellers, and only 1 returns the call (but too far away), by which time he likes the look of a blue one being sold by a dealer 40 miles away. So off we go and take look. I fall in love with it as well (especially after the test drive) and the deal's done at £12,750. He collects it on Friday as it has a couple of cosmetic issues the dealer's going to do. My wife says I mad going along with it, he thinks I'm the Daddy.

Eldest son texts on Thursday saying that he also has more cash than he thought and what did I think of this A4 diesel with S4 style wheels and parking sensors for £12,500?. By which time I've given up being Mr Sensible and go along to the dealer yesterday morning with him to take a look. It's a very nice car and he'd have bought it......expect I noticed a limited edition Golf GTI at the back of the showroom (a Pirelli SE with a 230BHP motor instead of the standard 200BHP, flashy unique wheels and really smart seats embossed with a Pirelli tread pattern). So we test drove it - bloody tremendous. He looked and me and I looked at him and nothing needed to be said. So we got home with the car to be greeted by SHMBO and the GF who were both expecting to see a fairly ecomonomic and sensible diesel, and not a GTI.

I'm now flavour of the month with the boys and a very bad influence in the wife's eyes. I'm not sure if I've been any use at all, but somehow feel quite pleased with myself

You say all that as if it's a bad thing!

I'm not a dad but I do seem to be 'car friend' to about 30 people, so as you can imagine i've pretty much given up trying to offer sensible advice!

Hahaha good deal all round I say, and that Mk5 GTI is good for 300Bhp after a remap, which should be fun.

Very nice indeed.

Years ago I returned from a 6 month tour in Bosnia looking to buy a Golf and ended up with a Corrado VR6.....

Its always funny seeing lads and lasses come back from tour.

After my first in 07 i bought a daytona 675 the day i got back. A house after my 2010 tour and a Noble after last years.
My sister got back this week and her A3 black edition is currently been built (based in germany so a bargin at 17k)

The camp after the leave is stuffed full of the most inpracticle array of cars you can imagine. Sad thing is most get sold or written off within the first year as they cant afford to run them
