I can imagine your fustration, hopefully you didn't great the old guy with this attitude. I admit that a lot of older drivers need to just throw in the towel with driving, but like them i wouldn't be so quick to give up a vital freedom.

If it's gone no futher than just traded words, then go no futher with the rants or you'll eat yourself alive.

the biggest problem is the insurance will probably sid with him...Was the junction on a slight incline etc. Make sure you record that, also as there someone behind you ho can verify your brake lights were on. That would help.

I don't think its a problem of "old people being bad drivers", its more a problem of "old bad drivers".

I never know what to do in those situations, do you keep close so they don't hit with much speed. Or keep a distance in hope they realise and stop?

Unfortunately I suspect that since you were behind him its your "fault", as bks as that may be. Probably him/his insurance co will claim you didnt leave enough room to allow for him potentially rolling back.

As above without CCTV or an independent witness (passengers aren't classed as independent) then it will go against you.

As the natural flow of traffic is forward, if you're alleging something other than the most likely occurrence, you have to prove it.

Had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago. I was stopped on a slight hill at traffic lights in neutral with my hand brake applied. The lights changed and the Transit van in front of me stalled and then rolled back into me. The driver leapt out and accused me of driving into the back of his van. Fortunately two lads on the pavement had seen the incident and immediately said it was him running into me. The main difference from your incident? I am 65 and the van driver was about 20. Do you think that makes it my fault?

You need a dash cam.

I'm thinking about getting one myself as it's becoming more and more of a worry that crash for cash will happen to me.

I do have a dash cam - it wasn't switched on at the time!

Not wanting to moralise but (oh go on then I will) treat every other road user as a potential fkwit, and give them plenty of room and you a get out route if you can. You will rarely be disappointed. If that means leaving a bus length between you and the "doddery old tt" in his shed when he is stopped on a hill so be it.

No damage no worries.

I firmly believe old people should be checked out by some sort of driving standards agency on a 3 yearly basis. At a cost. Not an OAP freebie.
Buses don't cost a penny for them..

Don't know why the government haven't utilised this idea as a little money spinner since they're grabbing money anyway they can right now.
Make it really expensive, like £150 a test. Will reduce the number of white heads on the road.

Thats a bit harsh. Drivers of any age can be totally useless and complete fkwits.

It never went as far as exchanging details, just words. If there'd been damage to mine I'd have obviously followed it up, but it was just his absolute ignorance in what he'd done and to accuse me of being at fault! I'd left about 3 feet or so between us, and when I saw him start rolling back I went for reverse but the car behind me was too close.

No doubt he'll go home and relay the tale to his family how some shaven headed aggressive young man rammed him and what's the world coming to etc etc!!!
3 feet? insurance would have def. sided with him. any driving teacher will say you need to leave enough gap to see the rear wheel of the car in front, so you have room for manouvre in exactly this kind of situation.

Anyone recommend a good dash cam? The less intrusive the better, circa £100.
Roadhawk, or if cheapness is an issue load up with a cycle head cam or an old mobile phone in a sticky cradle. Theres been plenty of threads about cheap dash cams I've noticed during my lurking years.

But a better and cheaper solution is to give the person infront plenty of room smile

I saw something like this happen a while back, I was coming off the M40 into Wycombe (quite a steep slip road) and I was sat alongside an old girl in an Escort, there was a new Black A5 in front of her.
I could see the A5 driver looking through sheets of paper, the A5 rolls back, hits the Escort, then pulls forward. The driver gets out, checks her rear bumper and gets back in her car yikes . I pulled alongside her and explained that she had just rolled into the car behind her and should she not at least appologise? She swore blind the car had in fact hit her and that I was only getting involed because she was a Muslim!

I just drove away in sheer disbelief, I should learn not to get involved in other peoples arguments I suppose.

Just been down to the shops and when leaving was sat at the junction behind an old fool in an Astra. He stalled then started rolling back towards my car whereupon I sounded the horn in the hope he'd apply the brakes.... He didn't! No damage thank fk but I got out to check and had a word as you do, only to be accused of losing my patience and RAMMING him!!!! Fortunately I had a passenger but the old fool said there's two of us so of course we'd say that, bearing in mind my passenger was my 63 year old mum!!!!
