Ford Puma, although it would be a ratty one for that. Hell you could have mine for that!

So many options. Whatever you choose I'd aim to drive it around the streets for a couple of weeks before you're due to leave as a sort of shake-down. I know it's more exciting to pick it up the night before and head out... but I don't think I've ever had a fun wait for a recovery truck!

Any E34 5 series with the exception of the 518. You'll get great fuel consumption but will start rolling back down the hill when you approach Hohe Acht...

You can pick up a straight 6 525 or 530 for buttons, have a decent degree of space and comfort for the journey and real hoot around the 'ring itself.

A Celica springs to mind... Have seen a few tatty ones (but great runners) for £500

..maybe an MR2 if you are after RWD thrills - could be a challenge finding one for £500 though

E46 325, 328, 330...
Just make sure it's rear wheel drive and manual.

Another vote for a mk2 MR2, plenty can be found under the £500 mark

Deffo Mk2 MR2 n/a....and if you find the right import (called g-limited's) i believe they have an LSD! Only cheap car i can think of that will be reliable enough but still handle and stop well enough for track use without modifications. I'd be tempted to make sure its on some decent tyres though, esp rears.

I think I agree with the Puma suggestion.

Lots of £500 Saab 9000 2.3t's have been to the ring over the years. They like to oversteer into a fish-tail wipeout if you're not ready for it. On the + side you'll get there and back and 300bhp is a simple ECU tweak for free from the internet!

+ given the number of times I've seen annoying Puma / Fiesta problems... I'd wonder about the sense of that. Overheating because of the electric heater control valve, rusty clutch hydrualic lines, decay in the wiring loom... that's a few I've seen. Not good 'old' cars. If you could get a new one for £500.00 then that would be good!

Best place to look is the RetroRides forum for sale section - loads of cars on there for under 500quid usually.

400quid Alfa 146Ti - with T&T and the frankly rather good 155bhp twinny motor.

Beat this if you can!

£500 got me in an E30 316, pulled an 11:25.6 BTG on the only clean lap. Was quite happy cruising at 110 all the way there and back.

My mate did rather better though; he found a very early Porsche 944, advertised as a non runner for £500. All it needed to get running was a fuel pump relay, and after the flat tyres were replace it passed the MOT with no more work needed. He decided to keep that one. smile

It's this sort of luck that makes snotterism so pleasurable. Sure you never get to drive anything less than 20 years old... but it IS fun!

If you say 'because its an Alfa', you lose!

mk3 mondeo, bigger the engine the better, handle very well, stop even better, safe, predictable handling, big enough to get all your crap there. v6 ones faster than a lot of hatches. Make sure you get one that doesn't need a clutch, very expensive job.
